Leave DATE blank?

If you add a date-based field, there seems no way to just leave the field (for future use), but keep it as a blank value. I see only the option to remove the field completely from the record.

I have tried hitting delete and space bar, they simply revert to "today".

Older posts suggest there was an "X" that could clear the value but leave the field, but I don't see that in version 8.10.8-47.

I am using both Windows and Android apps.

  • Hello @dna1990,

Thanks for your message. It sounds like you are trying to add a new date field to an existing item, but would like to leave this blank for the time being. When adding this field to an existing item, it's not possible to clear it and leave blank. However, categories that have a date field in the template can be left blank and this field will not appear until later edited and a value added. Credit Card items are an example.

Could you let know more about why it would be useful to you to include a blank date field in an item? Also are you looking to still see the field with a blank value in the item once saved? I'd be happy to pass your feedback along to the Product team consideration.

I would like the same functionality as the "template". Be able to add a custom field and some of the entries that use that model, will not always have a date value, or the value is not yet known.

For example, I'd like to have a Passport entry. I started with some category, probably SSN, and added the section for Passport Info, which includes several dates. I have the PP "numbers" on hand and wish to create entries for them, but at the moment - didn't have the date or other details. But now I have "today's" date filled in, and unless I go back and look carefully, won't know those are bogus dates.

Perhaps I am not "editing" the template as I should? Can I create a whole "template" or "category" that sorta looks like the built-in CreditCard or SSN, and customize it to be Passport...for example?

I am currently doing these customizations by creating the "first entry", customizing fields - then duplicate it for all other similar entries.

    Hi @dna1990,

Thanks for getting back to me with these additional details.

Creating custom templates or categories is not available at the moment. Creating a default item based off of another item category with added fields and duplicating this item is the best workaround available.

In your example, using the Passport item type would be your best choice there:

But now I have "today's" date filled in, and unless I go back and look carefully, won't know those are bogus dates.

If you're creating an item to be completed later, you can leave any fields blank that you do not currently possess information for instead of entering a placeholder date. When saving the item, only the completed fields will not appear in the item details pane. When reviewing these items, you'll be able to recognize items that need to be completed by the missing fields. Does this help?

In the meantime, I've added your voice by including a request for the ability to create custom templates/categories, with our Product team. If you have any additional feedback to share, I'd be happy to pass it along. Just let us know!
