Feature request - length as you type

In some applications you need to specify a password of a certain length, but may not wish to use the default settings - if you had set it to 20 or 25 characters. Another example is where I'm changing a password, and I know the minimum length is, say, 14, and I want to set the password at 14 - AND, I don't have access to 1Password (I'm not logged into Windows).
When I type a password in this situation I'm writing it out, counting the characters, and then entering into 1Password, so I know I get the number of characters right. But suppose I wanted to pre-create this password in 1Password, for use later. There doesn't seem to be any indication of password length. I would like a character count as I type. This is a specific use case - in most cases I would let it create a 20 character password, but in this case I'm talking about changing a password outside of Windows, without access to 1Password. Computers are very good at counting, so I'd like the computer to visually display the password length.

  • Hello @Jonathan2,

In cases where you are not using 1Password (and not logged into Windows) are you using another type of device or specific application to create and type out that new password, for example in a browser or text editor? If this is the case, your feature request would best directed to the creator of the OS or application you are using.

1Password itself can generate passwords for you. You can set several different preferences for passwords, including the length. Take a look at this guide which details how to Use the password generator to change and strengthen your passwords.

You can also Create a custom password using 1Password in the browser and a similar set of preferences.

I hope these guides are helpful. However, if you would like elaborate further on this feature request and how 1Password can help, just let us know and we can pass your feedback along to the Product team. Thanks!

Specifically I'm logging into Windows and I need to specify a new Windows password, so I make one up on a piece of paper, written down, then update it in 1Password once I've changed it during logon. I know how long it needs to be, so I could pre-create it in 1Password beforehand, Windows reminds me on the days just before it expires. After that I rarely use it as we use Windows Hello for the machines and SSO once logged in, as well as PAM (Privilege Access Management) for remote desktop, etc. When you type an SMS it will display how many characters you have typed, I thought it might be a useful feature.

  • Hello @Jonathan2,

Thanks for the update and clarifying the situation with creating a new Windows password for that sign in.

In these cases pre-creating a new password in 1Password with the designated length would be your best option:

With the password length setting currently in place, can you think of other situations or let us know where a password length counter would be useful to you? I'd be happy to pass those details along to your Product team on your behalf!

It would be useful to see, maybe in WatchTower, a report of passwords and their length, to easily spot those which were short, perhaps there could be a setting which says the minimum password length is X. This might change over time, when 8 characters was considered ok, then 12, then 14, and perhaps some of us like 20, but maybe our security department have now mandated 25 (!) so we have to identify all passwords we are storing in 1Password which are not 25 characters long. I love 1Password but it should take the back-break out of counting characters. Sometimes it's the little things in life which matter most.

    Hey @Jonathan2,

Sometimes it's the little things in life which matter most.

    I can't agree more!

Currently 1Password displays that strength meter, but I can see where a character count could come in handy when looking at older logins that need updating. I appreciate the additional feedback and use cases here. While I can't make any promises, I've recorded these details and sent it over to our team for consideration. 👍
