  • Hey @jollyjap

This is a known issue we're aware of when setting up a new 1Password account with passkeys. When you switch from 1Password to Settings to turn on iCloud Keychain then head back to 1Password, the request to create a passkey is cancelled and displays this error.

Once you have turned on iCloud Keychain in your iOS settings, could you restart the sign up process in 1Password and everything should now work as expected.

Thanks Jac, got a reminder to verify my email, which then re-started the process and I got the PassKey. Does the iCloud Keychain have to remain selected? It seems to remove the option of using 1Password to fill in password

Does the iCloud Keychain have to remain selected?

Short answer? No. Because you've saved your passkey for your 1Password account to iCloud Keychain, and then successfully used it to sign in to 1Password, you'll only need it again if you want to sign in to 1Password.com in Safari on your iPad (which might not be all that likely).

So, in this case, you can choose (only) 1Password in the AutoFill Passwords section of iOS's Settings and continue as before.

It seems to remove the option of using 1Password to fill in password

You can choose both at once, but there's a tradeoff: When you tap the "🔑 Passwords" button on the keyboard to autofill in an app or browser, you'd have to choose 1Password or iCloud Keychain each time. One extra tap may or may not be a big deal for you, but it's worth being aware of it. :)
