Passkey to sign in to 1Password problem

edited July 2023 in Unlock with passkeys

A few days ago I was invited to participate in the 1Password beta to login to 1Password with passkeys.

On the iPhone, I created a new 1Password account (using the same e-mail address as my main account). When I go to the 'Manage Accounts' page in the iOS app, I see both of my accounts. The new account has 'locked'. If I try to unlock the account, I'm unable to Sign in with passkey. I receive the following message 'Unable to sign in. Please contact support for assistance'. Note I'm using the iOS17 public beta on my phone.

Am I doing something wrong?

My apologies if this is not the right forum for this report.

Jeff

    Yes.

    The support page mentions this:

During the private beta, you’ll need to create a new 1Password account with an email address that isn’t tied to an existing 1Password account.

  • Hi there @jalanh

As @XIII mentioned, you need to use a different email address from your existing 1Password account. You might find this post helpful in this case:

Thank you! I've now successfully created an account that logs in via passkey. I've never used multiple accounts with 1password, so I'm a bit confused by the behavior. If I login via passkey, my new passkey account is unlocked, but my password account is not. If I login via password, both accounts are unlocked.

Also, on the Mac, if I login via the passkey, then try to unlock my password account, I'm offered to enter my password, but not offered to use Touch ID. Also, when trying to setup the passkey account on the Mac, several times, touching the validate (I don't recall the exact term) notification took me to the 1password app but didn't offer a validation option. I closed out my 1password app on my phone and then I was offered the validation screen when I touched the validation notification.

If I login via passkey, my new passkey account is unlocked, but my password account is not. If I login via password, both accounts are unlocked.

This is how we would expect 1Password to work in this case. Using biometrics, such as Face ID, Touch ID, or an Apple Watch, will unlock multiple accounts at once, since it's "common" to all of your 1Password accounts. However, I do see that you wrote:

Also, on the Mac, [...] I'm [...] not offered to use Touch ID

Could you send us a screenshot of what you see on the 1Password lock screen on your Mac? If you don't want to post it here, you can email it to support+forum@1password.com, including a link to this thread and your username, instead.

🔍👀 Check that no personal information such as any passwords, your credit card number, Secret Key or account password are visible in your screenshot, whether you post it here or email it to us.

I look forward to hearing from you either way.

Ah, this is something we're looking into right now. Sorry for the inconvenience. In the meantime, you can try either of these methods to be able to use Touch ID to unlock:

    • Click Cancel on that prompt, then click the 🔽 down arrow at the top of the sidebar and choose Lock to take you to the lock screen, where you'll be able to use Touch ID, or
    • Open the 1Password browser extension. If you don't get a prompt to unlock it with Touch ID, click the 1Password icon in the top-left corner, then your locked account.

If you can let me know if either/both of those work, I can update our internal notes about this issue with the results.
