Passkeys: Parents, Recovery, Moving Password Manager
I have a few very important questions regarding Passkeys before I will even consider using them:
1. Parents
They are now in their mid-60s and I have to manage ALL of their online accounts for them including banks, outlook email, utilities, loyalty cards, you name it. If I convert their accounts to Passkeys, I guess I won’t be able to log into their accounts on the web from my PC or Mac wherever I may be in the country (or overseas) like I do at present. Is that right? If so, that will be a huge problem in the future. As they age, they are LESS able to deal with tech, not more able. They get more and more frustrated as bank branches close, shops go self-service etc. It causes too much stress for them, and I have to manage their online lives for them.
2. Moving Password Managers
I moved to 1Password over 18 months ago because Dashlane became so terrible. If 1Password deteriorates in future, can I migrate Passkeys to another password manager?
3. Recovery
I think I read somewhere that Passkeys can also be used to log into 1Password itself. That sounds great. However, will there always be a Master key that can be printed out to log back in if all of your devices get stolen in one go?

Hello @sspaus! 👋
Thank you for the questions about passkeys, I'll answer them below:
- Parents
Passkeys are in the process of being rolled out across the industry and you can find a list of websites that currently support passkeys here: Passkeys.directory
Your parents can share a passkey with you just like they would share a password with you. Items that includes passkeys, that are stored in a shared vault in 1Password, will be available to all family members who have access to that shared vault: Create and share vaults
You can learn more about using passkeys stored in 1Password here: Save and sign in with passkeys in your browser
- Moving Password Managers
At this stage, you cannot import or export passkeys. We’re working closely with platform vendors and other password managers through the FIDO Alliance to create a secure way to import and export passkeys. We believe it’s your choice where to store and use your passkeys. Hopefully we’ll have more to share soon.
You can also create a new passkey for a website any time within another manager and remove any existing passkeys from 1Password.
- Recovery
Unlocking 1Password with a passkey is currently in a private beta and we hope to share more news soon.
While we are still working through the exact details of how account recovery will work in 1Password, we plan to include multiple secure options in case you lose a device or biometrics are not available. Generally, we recommend adding as many trusted devices across platforms as possible. Other fallback methods may be available, such as a recovery code or account recovery contact.
Let me know if you have any other questions. 🙂

@Dave_1P Really appreciate the detail you gave. Part 2 of your answer is the challenge for me.
As my parents can never remember any password (and always lose the piece of paper if they write them down), I have stored all of their credentials in their respective Apple Keychains, in addition to my 1Password account. They simply won't be able to remember Master Passwords and do password sharing (I've tried it, it's too confusing for them). The important thing for me will be if I can store the same passkey in 1Password and Apple Keychain. It seems from Part 2 of your answer that importing passkeys will be possible in future, but I can't tell whether that means you will be able to have the same passkey in 2 different password manager systems at once.
I wish my parents could use a password manager and password sharing, but they struggle with Keychain as it is. Only now after 2 years of using it do they understand to look for the password suggestion that appears above the keypad when they need to re-enter their credentials such as after an app updates itself, as an example. It's a nightmare which will last a long time for me.

I'm sorry for the late reply, I missed your response to this thread. If your parents are open to using 1Password instead of iCloud Keychain, then you could setup a shared vault that contains all of their passkeys and that you also have access to: Create and share vaults

I'm afraid that I don't have any details to share, exporting and importing passkeys is something that the industry as a whole is still working on creating a standard for.

Some services will allow you to add multiple passkeys for authentication, so you could save a passkey in iCloud Keychain for your parents and then save a second passkey in your own 1Password account. Alternatively, most services still allow you to use a password to sign in even if you add a passkey.
I do understand that sometimes password managers can be confusing and complex to use. The team is working hard on making 1Password easier to use for everyone, the future is bright. 🙂
