Issue synchronizing Google passkey

So I have been playing around with passkeys and I have tried creating a passkey for my Google login on my Mac, using the Safari 1Password extension. So far so good, the passkey was added to the Google account entry in 1Password. I can also log in using said passkey on Safari on my Mac.

However, even though the passkey is synchronized properly to my iPhone, I cannot use it to log in to my Google account on the iPhone. It will suggest that I create a new passkey after logging in using my password, and if I do that, a second passkey is created (so now I have 2 entries stored). After that, it works (but it doesn't make much sense to me, as I'm supposed to be able to use a single synchronized passkey).

If instead of creating a new passkey when suggested I click on "try another way" and choose "use passkey", the iPhone will show a QR code that I have to scan (presumably with a different iPhone? 😂)

So I tried the other way around: I deleted both passkeys and started over. Then I created a passkey on my iPhone, which then synced to my Mac. And now I'm able to log in using the same passkey, both on my Mac and iPhone.

Why is that? Why can I not create a passkey on my Mac that syncs properly to my iPhone? At least for my Google account it doesn't work.

1Password Version: 8.10.18
Extension Version: 2.16.0
OS Version: macOS 17.0
Browser: Safari 17.0

  • Hello @ManuCH,

Thanks for reaching out, sorry for the delay in response.

We've done some testing on our end but haven't been able to recreate the same behaviour. Would you be able to re-create the passkey on MacOS then wait for the item to sync before attempting to login to Google on your iOS device?

I look forward to hearing back from you.

I've experienced a similar situation. I first set up a key on a Mac [sonoma]. I then logged in to the same account on an iPad. Was asked to create a passkey - which I did as I am confused it passkeys can the shared among different devices. Just looked in 1P and the passkey shown is one one I created on the iPad.

    What am I doing wrong?

I'm sorry that you're running into trouble when signing into your Google account on your iPad. Just to confirm: are you signing into a Google app or a website? If so then which specific app or website?

Can you post a screenshot of what you see when you try to sign in to your Google account by tapping "Try another way" from their login page and choosing passkeys? Make sure that nothing sensitive is visible in the screenshot.
