Password Entry Disappeared!

Hi,

I just had a troubling if not scary experience with 1P.

I visited Marriott.com where I have an account registered in 1P. When I tried to login the site required I set a new password, and so I visited the change password screen and saw the 1P pop-up (from the Firefox 1P extension) offer to fill in a new password. While the 1P extension was displaying the pop-up I ran 1P separately to copy the current password from password field to the note field (to make it easy to recover if the proposed password wasn't accepted but the extension changed the 1P entry) and saved the 1P entry. Then I clicked OK (or its equivalent) in the pop-up, and the password update failed with a web site error. When I tried again I found that Marriott 1P password entry was gone! Gone in the PC app, gone in the Android app, and gone in the web app. I couldn't access history because that's invoked from the entry which disappeared. Not in Recently Deleted, not shown in the name ordered list or change date ordered list, not findable in the search, just totally gone.

Luckily I was able to recover because I periodically backup my 1P data and so I was able to recreate the Marriott entry. If I hadn't been obsessive enough to create periodic 1P backups (and I doubt few people are) it appears that I would have lost that entry forever and would never have been able to find the current password.

I wouldn't be surprised that the sequence of operations I used is one you wouldn't recommend. However no matter what a user does, no matter how odd, inept or unconventional, it should be IMPOSSIBLE for any sequence of operations to delete a password entry without knowledge of and permission from the user and with no way to recover the entry.

My description of what happened is from memory and I think it's substantively accurate, but there may be errors. In any case it's the best I can do.

Thanks,
Mike

  • Hey @MikeA01730, thanks for reaching out.

I'm sorry to hear about this experience and can certainly understand your concerns here. You're absolutely correct, under no circumstance should any item disappear like that.

While the 1P extension was displaying the pop-up I ran 1P separately to copy the current password from password field to the note field (to make it easy to recover if the proposed password wasn't accepted but the extension changed the 1P entry) and saved the 1P entry.

This would not be expected to work as you would be actively editing an item in two different places. So any changes you make in the desktop app while the "Update Item" prompt is up in your browser, will immediately be removed when you select "Update" (as the item state that you're updating to is from before you made the change in the desktop app). With that said, this should not result in the behaviour you encountered.

Then I clicked OK (or its equivalent) in the pop-up, and the password update failed with a web site error.

Could you tell me a little more about this error? For instance, did it appear on the 1Password extension pop-up or on the website itself?

To investigate further, I'd also like to ask you to create a diagnostics report from your Windows PC:
