Windows Hello isn't working properly and questions about passkey beta
I've got a lovely long password to sign in to my 1Password account. Don't like typing it in to the extension every time I reopen my browser (a fair number of times, since I use 4 operating systems). Is the ability to use a passkey to unlock 1Password browser extension still limited to the beta? Or if not, can someone remind me where the handy instructions are for how to do it? Thanks!
1Password Version: Not Provided
Extension Version: 2.18.9 and 2.17.1
OS Version: Win11, 2 Linuxes, MacOS Sonoma latest update
Browser: Vivaldi (Chrome-based)

Hello @judmarc! 👋
Thank you for the question! Unlocking 1Password using a passkey is something that we're currently testing in a limited private beta: Private Beta: Create a 1Password Account with a Passkey

I recommend that you turn on biometric or Apple Watch unlock on your devices so that you don't have to type your account password in all the time. I'll include some guides below.
For Mac:
For Windows:
For Linux:
I hope that helps! 🙂

Hi Dave!
Yep, I'm on the beta, but I don't have anything particularly important stored there. Seems to work pretty well.
On the current non-beta builds:
Mac works great.
On Windows, the browser always tells me that I need to type in my password before I can use Windows Hello.
On Linux, the same USB fingerprint scanner that is seen as 'touch' on Windows is seen as 'swipe' by Linux and simply won't work. Any ideas for a good USB fingerprint scanner that works well on Linux? I'm doing OK using my phone on sites that allow passkey via device (and on the 1Password beta).
Thanks,
Jud

Thank you for the reply. I'm sorry that you're running into trouble with biometrics when using 1Password for Windows and Linux. Let's focus on Windows for a moment, so that I can better understand the situation, can you tell me the following:
- After you enter your account password, are you then able to use Windows Hello in the browser?
- Are you able to use Windows Hello to unlock the 1Password for Windows desktop app?
- In which browser are you encountering the issue?

I don't have any specific recommendations myself but perhaps someone else in the community will be able to jump in and recommend one. 🙂
I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Dave, Happy Thanksgiving!
- After you enter your account password, are you then able to use Windows Hello in the browser?
Until I exit the browser. After the restart, entering my password is necessary again.
- Are you able to use Windows Hello to unlock the 1Password for Windows desktop app?
Similar situation there, I'm asked to enter my password before I can use Windows Hello. If I enter my password in the desktop app, I don't need to do so in the browser extension.
- In which browser are you encountering the issue?
Vivaldi, which is Chrome-based, but I have the same situation with the desktop app, so it's not browser-specific.
