Anyone using a Steamdeck?

SteamOS is an immutable OS. Anything you can install has to be a Flatpak unless you want to turn off the root protections (which will be reset when you next update the OS anyway).

Someone has come up with a neat way to use systemd extensions (https://github.com/sebble/1password-sysext-steam-deck) to get 1Password installed in a way that works better than flatpak (which is also not supported now). This seems to work pretty well (ssh agent is fully functional, so is CLI and the desktop app)

One issue it has is it doesn't really work well with Firefox as that is a Flatpak and I guess theres communications issues. Is there likely to be any progress on that? There is an open issue https://github.com/sebble/1password-sysext-steam-deck/issues/11 with what looks like a 1Password comment from back in April.

1Password Version: Latest
Extension Version: Latest
OS Version: SteamOS 3.5

  • Hey @mrwonka, thanks for reaching out.

It's expected that 1Password won't be able to communicate with Firefox if either app is installed via Flatpak. This is due to the lack of support for Native Messaging in Flatpak. The proposed MR in the issue you mentioned looks like it's still a work in progress.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for the answer as why it's not working in Flatpack. I managed on my side to install the Flatpack desktop version + ext. in FF. Good enough for now but I do hope we'll get a "full" version for Flatpack :P
