1Password on a work laptop

I have installed 1Password on a work laptop and this required my Secret Key, since it was a new device.

This got me wondering, what should I do to remove 1Password completely from such a laptop? If I uninstall 1Password, does this also remove any trace of my Secret Key from that laptop? In this scenario, such laptops may be Windows 11 or macOS (Ventura / Sonoma), so I'm interested to understand what's involved for each, to remove things correctly.

I am aware I can regenerate a new Secret Key and perhaps returning a work laptop would be a great time to do just that.

I am new to trying 1Password, so all helpful advice is appreciated.

Thank you.

I found detailed Uninstall instructions in the Knowledgebase, which is very helpful.

I guess, then, my question boils down to the Secret Key, and whether it is best practice to regenerate the Secret Key when returning a work device.

I realise the Secret Key, by itself, is not enough for a potential attacker to be able to exploit. I have read that on Windows, the Secret Key is "lightly obfuscated". Nevertheless, we still want to keep that secret, as far as possible.

If regenerating the Secret Key is advisable in this scenario, I'm also interested to know if there are particular consequences of the Secret Key changing.

    Thank you.

Never thought about this, but I have to return a work MacBook soon.

Usually I just format the SSD before returning, but this Mac is a managed Mac (MDM), so my options are perhaps limited,

    So also interested in advice.

  • Hey @Enthusiast and @XIII, thanks for the question.

It wouldn't be necessary to regenerate the Secret Key as long as you've removed your 1Password data from the device after uninstalling 1Password.

It sounds like you have already done so @Enthusiast, in which case any trace of the Secret Key would be removed from the device.

@XIII, similarly, formatting the drive would accomplish the same thing but if you're unable to do so I would suggest following the steps above.

Let me know if this helps or if you have any further questions.
