REQ - Password Generator customization

I'd like to be able to customize the passwords generated by 1Password more.

For instance with the "Memorable Password" option I'd like to be able to have it add numbers, special characters, randomly pick the separator from several options, etc.

I want to to keep my passwords from following an easy to guess pattern while not forcing me to deal with too much complete randomness.

On occasion I have to type a password, I want it easy enough to remember for a few moments that I don't have to go letter by letter. I can remember "correct-horse-battery-staple" long enough to type it out and then forget it. I can't remember "G5ut4NBBrxPh" long enough to type it and inevitably have to refer to it several times when typing it out.

Adding some randomness to the password while keeping it mostly Memorable seems to be the best of both worlds.

  • Hello @airlie! 👋

Thank you for the feedback! Are you referring to the password generator in the apps or in the browser extension? If it's the latter then you can already add symbols/numbers and make other customizations when creating a custom password:

    Yes, but sort of no.

I'd personally like a few more options. It's Ok now.

I'd like to use the same separator (or none) for the whole password, but have that separator picked randomly from a customized list.

I want the password to have a pattern I can easily grasp at a glance and remember just long enough to re-type somewhere, while not having every password use the exact same pattern.

It's finding my personal balance of security and convenience.

    • Simple memorable collection of random words.
    • Change capitalization rules randomly, but not crazy. Easy to see at a glance but not predictable ahead of time. Make a random word all caps or start each word with a capital. Consistent in a single password, but varying across passwords.
    • Change / remove separators randomly. Again, consistent in one password, but not across passwords.
    • Optional total random chars. Not always at the end, not always at the beginning, sometimes in the middle. Preferably not scattered throughout, but grouped as if it was a word. 3 or 4 chars would probably be good enough for me.

    Ex:
    987-crazed-skyrocket-smoky
    entire\123@1\olympics\upcoming
    SpeechEsophagusSetting
    dilation_HURT_%$#_defacing
    CRUMPET-CLUNKY-BOASTFUL-321@#

You can mostly hold each of these passwords in your mind for a few minutes, but they are still a bit more complex than average.

    @airlie

I deleted a previous version of this comment because I misunderstood your use case, I'm sorry for any confusion. 🙂

Thank you for posting a detailed description of how you would like 1Password's password generator to be improved. While I can't make any promises, I've filed a feature request with our product team on your behalf.

I did want to take a step back to say that passwords created using the memorable password generater in 1Password are still quite strong, especially if you choose digits as the separator. And if you did want an easier way to type passwords onto another device then you can use the Reveal in large type option to keep the password displayed on your phone as you type the password.

    Thank you for the feedback!
