Feature Request: Printing

I see this has been discussed and closed...this is to add my urging to the notion of providing a hard copy formatted print capability.

Your security concerns are my concerns...but, I should have the option to waive your concerns for mine when it comes to risking my own security. I would be willing to sign away any liability concerns you might have for 1PW in return for the simple privilege of printing my own data in a readable format and taking my own risks accordingly.

    Hello @sassy! 👋

Thank you for the feedback! I can certainly pass along your request for a print feature to our product team for consideration. Could you tell me a little more about how you'd use a printed copy of your passwords? Better understanding your need to print items will allow our product team to better prioritize the feature or build a new feature that might fulfill your need in a better way.

I look forward to hearing from you. 🙂

I've used and enjoyed the print feature in the past....my husband is a bit of a computer-phobe and frankly I feel less exposed with a print copy than imagining him klutz-ing around my 1PW program on his own.

BUT... I feel that the option is not an exposure for 1PW and is a clear preference for some of your customers...so why not provide it for those (few?) who want it. I don't understand 1PWs reluctance and I do bristle at being "nannied". Am I missing something?

Thank you for the reply, I appreciate you providing those details about your use case. I can certainly understand how a printed copy would make it easier for some folks to navigate passwords in an emergency situation, especially if they're not technically savvy or already familiar with 1Password.

1Password 8 is a fresh start for us with a brand new experience and coded using modern languages and frameworks. However this means that all features need to be built from scratch, even if they previously existed in older versions of the app. Which features are built, and when, depends on a variety of factors that include customer demand, developer resources, and our existing product roadmap.

Historically, I've recommended that folks avoid printing their passwords and other items since that will remove them from the secure and encrypted environment of 1Password. Any exported or printed copy of your passwords will be in plain text and so will be readable by anyone who views it. When you pay your membership fee for 1Password, you're paying for a multi-level security system to protect your most important information. By printing your items, you bypass that security system entirely resulting in your passwords and other important information no longer being protected by 1Password.

All that being said, I do understand your need for such a feature. While I can't make any promises, I've passed along your request for a print feature to our product team. They'll consider the feature request as they're planning future versions of 1Password.

For the time being, if you need to print just a few items for your husband you can do so from 1Password.com (in the browser, not the app). Login to your 1Password account on the website, click on the item you'd like to print and then select File > Print in your browser. Items printed from the website will need to be printed individually.

    I hope that helps. 🙂

    Dave...thank you, that does help.

I appreciate receiving such a complete answer to my question. I feel "heard"...and you have given me a work around for ad hoc needs ....which is a good thing.

I will still keep my fingers crossed for full print capability down the line.

There is "security" in old school methods too...in my case, the security of being an anonymous citizen (so no one is intentionally seeking me or my puny data out)....and the security of ramshackle anonymous paper files that have to be found, rifled through and understood before they can be utilized for anything even mildly nefarious....low odds for that anonymous citizen like me. My electronic files are a much higher risk overall!!

Thank you again for your complete answers and your kind and professional approach!

  • It's my pleasure, thank you again for taking the time to post your feedback in the community. It helps us make 1Password better for everyone. 😊

Not everyone in my family is tech-savvy. Why is this request from numerous users, continually ignored? It's my data. How do I print a list of URLs and associated Passwords?

    Hello @albartos,

Thanks for your message. I've moved your request to another thread to keep the discussion in one place. This thread discusses why we recommend against printing your items from 1Password.

Dave has provided an alternate option above, but if you would still like to print URLs and password items you can also export items to .csv file and print from the software of choice.

We recognize that this has been a feature request from other users and I've included your request for the Product team's consideration. We appreciate your feedback!

Very strongly agree for the need to print, and the willingness to sign a liability agreement. This is huge for those of us who are the stage of needing to prepare for legacy issues -- I suspect quite a few of us in our 50s and older, and a not insignificant number who are younger than that. I realize that there are other ways of sharing vaults, but they do not work in all family circumstances. Some of us need to resort to bank safety deposit boxes/lawyers'/other vault files for personal family reasons. Thanks very much.

Thank you for the feedback, I've passed it along to the team. Have you considered printing a copy of your Emergency Kit, writing your password on the Kit, and then keeping that with your lawyer or in a safety deposit box?

The Emergency Kit will allow your lawyer or family members to access your 1Password account in an emergency.
