How to get my custom categories to appear in the sidebar?

I've enabled showing categories in the sidebar, but it only shows Logins and Identities. I have so many other categories associated with the items I imported to my vault, ie., Utilities, Music, Health, Autos, etc. It would help streamline what I want to view, and locate entries more easily.

Update: I have not found a way to show those categories, but I have found that I can create a tag that matches the category, and those headings will appear in the sidebar. It sort of makes any category entry on the actual entry pointless, tho.

  • Hello @Topo! 👋

Welcome to 1Password! If you're using an individual or family account then it's not possible to create custom categories right now, instead you can create items using the categories that come included in 1Password:

Can you tell me what you mean when you say that you have custom categories? Are you able to provide a screenshot of what that looks like?

Hi Dave...I'll include some screen shots. I don't see any categories other than Logins and Identities in the sidebar. I would assume that is a sorting option, whereby I could select one and then see the associated items in the column to the right. I can't seem to locate how to get other categories, as shown in the link you provided, such as Notes, Credit Cards or Documents, to show up in that sidebar list. You can also see that I've started creating my own Categories based on tags. This allows me to select one and view all items tagged as such. And, you can see the Categories section on the example in the image, but as mentioned, I don't see how that is useful and relates to any feature that could allow me to view those categories.

Do you have an item saved in the respective category? If not, most will not show in the sidebar until at least one item is saved under that category. Here in my test account you can see several categories. For example SSH keys is not shown because I do not have an SSH key in this account.

Hi..thanks...how do you save into the different categories? I don't see a list of them anywhere. If I select an item and right click into Edit mode, I've added a field, and for example, I create Financial as a category, but that does not appear in the sidebar categories list. This seems to be a very hidden feature. This feature should work by allowing any item to be assigned to a category, but I happened to notice Add New Item in the drop down menu. That seems opposite of how this should work. Or, that action should say, Add a New Category (from which you can assign different items too). I have hesitated to use that menu command, not knowing if it will create something I don't want cluttering up stuff. Anyway...hope you, or someone, can shed some light on how this Category thing works. It's a mystery to me.

To start a new item click the "+ New Item" in the upper right-hand corner. Searching is available if it's not on the first screen. Correct, 1Password only has specific categories. It is not possible to add custom categories.

There may be more not shown in my second screenshot. I'm not sure I have one of every type. The screenshot may help though.

Is that New Item different than the Menu drop down New Item?

  • @Topo – Same thing by a different route. You can either:

    • click the File menu > New item > [the category you want], or
    • click the "+ New Item" button in the top-right corner of the main 1Password window
  • For example, in the one on the right, you'll find the option to create a Mac Login type item. For the most part, everything you see there will also be on the right. Use whichever method suits your needs. :) The right side contains more of a menu driven approach.

Thanks. Is it possible to apply any of those category attributes to an existing item in the vault? I’ve got a ton of vault items already, so I’m trying to figure out how adding a new categorized item is of benefit. It would be super handy if I could drag items from my vault into those categories.

Thanks for the reply. It's not currently possible to convert an item from one category to another category. But I'll let the team know that you'd be interested in seeing that feature get added to 1Password in the future. For the time being, you'd need to re-create the item in the desired category and then manually copy and paste your data over.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi Dave...Tags seem to accomplish what I want. I have way more categories than the built in ones. They just don't have the little custom icon. IMO, this is something that will enhance the user experience greatly. Categories such as Entertainment, Insurance, Auto, Home Mac Software, TV & Music Streaming, Photo/Video, Cloud Storage accounts, etc. I could go on and on, but suffice to say, it would be great if the system allowed creating your own categories and adding your own icon. For now, tho, it seems that the Tags do the same thing, minus the customization of look. Along with this feature should be the ability to drag any item onto the category shown in the sidebar, for it to be immediately added to that category list. Hope you can help to make engineering work on this. Thanks

Thank you for the feedback. While I can't make any promises, I've let the team know that you would appreciate a feature to create custom categories. Such a feature will be considered for future versions of 1Password.

It sounds like using tags is a great solution for the time being. 🙂
