@Dave_1P I am still seeing the same behaviour in Edge however. Is the Edge extension not updated to support the same behaviour as the one for Chrome? I am running the 1P Extension version 2.21.0 in Edge 123.0.2420.53.

    Thanks!

@Dave_1P Anything new on this? Again today with the latest Edge available it has come up.

It is quite disruptive in the workflow; restarting Edge is not always seamless, and can sometimes cause loss of data if a webpage is burried in the background with unsaved data.

Is there an ETA for a fix to be available for Edge as well?

    Thanks,
    Eric

  • Hello @benze! 👋

Thanks for the ping, I'm sorry that your post was missed earlier. I'm not seeing other recent reports from Microsoft Edge users so I'd like to learn a little more about the situation. So that I can look into this further, can you send me the following the next time that you see the message:

Attach both files to an email message addressed to support+forum@1password.com.

    With your email please include:

You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number. Please post that number here. Thanks very much!

@Dave_1P My original post regarding Edge experiencing the same problems was split to a different thread (https://1password.community/discussion/145196/message-microsoft-edge-has-an-update-available) but then locked for additional comments.

I'm not sure why it was locked, nor if there has been any additional efforts to identify the problems with Edge.

Can you let me know if there has been any investigations into the issue, or even if it has been backlogged?

    Thanks,

    Eric

    @benze

Thanks for the ping. The other thread is specifically for an issue with Chrome's update process that has been fixed in the latest versions of 1Password. I split your comment into a new thread since you're reporting an issue in Edge that might be distinct from the old issue in Chrome and I want to save folks in that thread, who aren't using Edge, the notifications on each new reply.

I see that your support ticket is open and that one of my colleagues has reached out to our development team to investigate this further. Keep an eye on your inbox, you'll receive a reply as soon as possible.

I'll keep this thread open in case others report the same issue so that we can keep the discussion in one place. 🙂

Is there a way to get updates on this topic? I'm having the same problem on macOS. It's especially annoying because Edge has had 5 updates in the last 6 days, and, worse yet, for some reason Edge on my Mac doesn't show me the "you should update" indicator, so I usually find out there's an update when I'm trying to do something and 1P doesn't work.

Removing the desktop app integration will only make it worse (because my master password is long and secure). I'd love to get notices if there's any movement on the topic.

It also gives me a different message sometimes, but I'll capture that one next time I see it and report it.

Also, without further explanation "1Password is trying to unlock the browser extension." and I have to put in my password. In this case, Edge was up to date.

ETA: Turns out that 1Password had lost the Touch ID setting. Took a few tries to turn Touch ID back on and make it take, quitting 1Password between tries.

Thank you for reaching out. An internal work item has been open with our development team to investigate this further but I don't have any updates to share. For the time being, keeping Microsoft Edge updated is the best advice that I can provide.

Our team did solve a similar issue with Chrome earlier this year, so moving to that browser may be another option to consider if the issue interrupts your workflow too much.

I'm sorry that Touch ID stopped working in Microsoft Edge on your Mac. It sounds like things are working now, let me know if the issue comes back and I can help further. 🙂

Please get some attention on this issue. Edge updates every other day and it forces me to re enter my master password to unlock and does not give me any option to use touch id to unlock. It is annoying as hell.

  • @usamamoin

I'm sorry for the disruption to your workflow. I've shared your experience and report with the team internally.

I'm seeing the same issue. Any updates?

  • @LouKrieg

Thank you for reaching out. How often do you see the message in Microsoft Edge? If you restart your browser, does the message disappear? Has it been a long time since you restarted your browser after a new update?

Restarting the browser clears the prompt. The issue is that many apps (including Edge) update on an almost daily basis, which means that this interruption to my workflow is extremely annoying. It is unclear why the existence of a pending update should cause the browser extension to lose authentication.

  • @LouKrieg

Our developers resolved a similar issue for Chrome about a year ago. The issue stemmed from the fact that an update to Chrome replaces it's on-disk files while Chrome and still running and this causes a mismatch between the code signature of the on-disk version of Chrome and the in-memory version of Chrome.

Our developers were able to improve the situation for Chrome's updater and, if the message in Edge is caused by a similar situation, then hopefully things can be improved there as well in the future. For now, restarting your Microsoft Edge when you see the message is the best best option.

Thanks Dave. That explanation makes sense. I appreciate the follow-up.

  • I'll keep the thread updated on fixes and improvements for the issue as they come from our development team. 🙂
