Adding & removing the "guarded" protection flag

Hi!
I recently upgraded a licensed product which changed my key. I tried to rename the title of the old license key and could not. Looking at the JSON, it has the "guarded": "yes" attribute. I wanted to confirm that the only way to set or remove the attribute is via the 1P CLI. Is that correct? I haven't been able to find documentation for the different options.

If this is CLI only, I wanted to advocate for this functionality to be available in the UI.

Thanks!
Murray

  • Hi @MurZimminy, thanks for reaching out!

I'm sorry that you're encountering trouble when trying to rename the title of an old license key. Can you clarify if the key was saved as a Software License item in 1Password? If so, are you trying to rename the title of the item itself or the license key field label within the item?

I look forward to hearing from you!

Yes. It is indeed a license key and I was trying to change the License Key title.

The use case is that the product changed to a new multi-license key model with the new version. The original key is still good and I wanted to rename it to be more clear the purpose of the key.

    Thank you for clarifying!

Since the license key field it is a guarded field, you won't be able to edit the field label. I would suggest adding a custom field to store the license key value instead, as this will allow you to rename the field.

With that said, if you'd like to have the ability to directly edit the main license key field label, let me know, and I'll be happy to submit a feature request to our Product team for further consideration.

I look forward to hearing from you!

    David,

This is a good question. I see the importance of having guarded field titles on specific item types, but I also was frustrated that I couldn't modify it despite generally knowing what I am doing.

@david.m_1P - please go ahead and submit the request for consideration. Maybe it could be an option under the advanced settings or if debug is toggled on.

Thanks for your help with this. I appreciate the customer service.
