Want to unlock 1Password App with pin, not vault master password OR device password
I am considering switching to 1Password and I am accustomed to using a PIN to unlock my current password manager app on my android devices. I don't want to use my very long vault master password because it's purpose is encryption not authentication. I don't want to use my device password because, on at least one device, I can't because I am not even using a password (that device is used just for web browsing).
It is kind of a deal breaker to switch to 1Password so I need to know if that feature might be on the near term (next 6 months or less) radar screen for 1Password app improvement. Does anybody know about this possibility?

Hello @morbeus! 👋
Thanks for reaching out. There are a few different ways to unlock 1Password on your Android device:
- Your account password.
- Biometrics (such as your face or fingerprint): Use your fingerprint, face, or iris to unlock 1Password on your Android device
- Your device passcode: Use your device passcode, PIN, or pattern to unlock 1Password
I'm not aware of any plans to introduce a separate PIN for unlocking 1Password. If you prefer not to use your device passcode then I would recommend enabling biometric unlock or making your account password easier to type in: How to choose a good 1Password account password
I hope that helps. 🙂

I have been told that 1Password used to have such a feature but it was removed at some point...
My password manager account password is long and complex so I am not going to use that. I have found biometrics unreliable (too many failures). A device passcode, pin or pattern is meant to unlock the device. IMO, that should be it's only purpose. There are those in my household who know how to access my phone in an emergency but that does not mean I want them accessing my password manager! Therefore, IMO, use of such device passcode, pin or pattern is not appropriate to also protect sensitive apps such as my password manager.
It is quite common for individual apps that need extra security to have their own passcode. A password manager is the most important and sensitive app on my phone which I therefore believe merits its own unique passcode. If 1Password cannot do this then I will seek a different password manager that will give the protection that I believe such apps need.

Thank you for the feedback, I've shared it with the team. There isn't a way to set a custom pin and it sounds like the best option for you is to set an account password that is easier to type in while still being secure using the guide that I shared earlier. Remember that your 1Password account is protected using not only your account password, but your Secret Key as well: About your Secret Key
Alternatively, I would recommend reaching out to the manufacturer of your Android device so that they can troubleshoot the biometric failures that you're running into since that isn't the intended experience with biometrics.
