Chrome passkey dialog shows up instead of 1Password one

Using Chrome desktop, when I try to login to any of my passkey-enabled accounts (e.g. Google) using a passkey, I only get offered the standard Chrome dialog:

If I do the exact same thing on the same computer using a different browser (Firefox), I get the 1Password popup as expected:

I tried switching to the 1Password Beta Chrome extension but I get the same result.
Is there anything I can do to get this working?

1Password Version: 8.10.32
Extension Version: 2.23.3
OS Version: macOS 14.4.1
Browser: Chrome 124.0.6367.208

  • Hello @ptab! 👋

I'm sorry that 1Password isn't showing a prompt to help you sign in to a website with a passkey when using Chrome. As a first step, make sure that the built-in password manager in Chrome is turned off and that 1Password is set as the default password manager: Turn off the built-in password manager in your browser

Then, make sure that saving and signing in with passkeys is turned on:

    1. Open your browser.
    2. Right-click on the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar and click Settings.
    3. Click Autofill & save.
    4. Make sure that "Offer to save and sign in with passkeys" is turned on.

Then close Chrome and reopen it and try to sign in using a passkey again. Let me know if you still see the prompt from Chrome.

Hi Dave, thanks for the tips. I already had all your suggestions correctly configured so they didn't fix my problem, but they did lead me to eventually finding the reason why this doesn't work.

Something I did not mention in my original message is that I am on a company laptop, and my Google and Chrome accounts are managed by my employer who uses Keeper for secret management. Aside from the 1Password extension, I also have the Keeper extension (installed remotely by the system administrator, and cannot be disabled). Despite having every single autofill setting in Keeper disabled, never having seen a popup from their extension (for passwords or passkeys), and having my Chrome delegating all password management duties to 1Password:

It looks like simply having the Keeper extension enabled makes Chrome choose to show its own passkey prompt instead of the 1Password one. I'm able to easily reproduce this in Incognito mode: disabling the Keeper extension makes the 1Password passkey prompt work as expected, and enabling it makes Chrome show its default one.

Since I am not able to disable this extension in non-Incognito mode (due to remote administration settings), is there something I can do? Is this something 1Password can address on their end, or a Chrome bug?

I'm glad that you were able to solve the mystery! The native passkey prompt appearing when Keeper is installed is something that the team has been before. 1Password isn't designed to be used alongside another password manager and if your workplace mandates the use of Keeper then there are likely browser policies in place to keep it as the primary password manager in your browser.

I would reach out to your IT team to discuss what options are available when it comes to you using 1Password over your organization's chosen password manager. In many cases, organizations don't want employees using non-approved password managers. If you're using 1Password only for personal matters then I'd suggest working with your IT team to setup a second Chrome profile, or install a different browser, for those needs.

    I hope that helps. 🙂
