Set Autofill keyboard shortcut that ONLY works in Chrome?

I'm trying to set a keyboard shortcut that triggers the Autofill function, but I don't want this to be active in non-browser apps. I mainly use it in Chrome only but occasionally would use Firefox or Safari.

Is there a way to configure 1P such that the keyboard shortcut only activates when Chrome is the active application? In my case, I want to bind the ⌘S key to this function, which is problematic obviously for most other apps where that means "Save".

Here are my current settings (obviously this is not what I want):

1Password Version: 8.10.32
Extension Version: 2.23.3
OS Version: macOS 14.5
Browser: Chrome

  • Hello @luckman212! 👋

Thanks for reaching out. As the name suggests, Universal Autofill is designed to be available in any Mac App on your device: Use Universal Autofill in apps and browsers on your Mac

Is there a reason why you wanted to make the Autofill shortcut Command-S? That's a very common shortcut for saving on macOS, why not choose a different shortcut for Autofill?

The best workaround, for Chrome specifically, that I can think of would be to set a blank shortcut for Autofill in the 1Password app. Then you can set the "Active the extension" shortcut for 1Password in the browser to Command-S: chrome://extensions/shortcuts

When on a page you can then open the extension using Command-S and press Enter to autofill your login into the page.

My reasons for wanting to use ⌘S are

    • muscle memory - this is what I have been using for years w/ Bitwarden
    • it's one of the easiest to type (distance-wise) so is very comfortable
    • I never use the "Save" command in a browser so there is no conflict in general with that

I had thought of (and tried) the workaround you suggest, to trigger the extension via ⌘S in Chrome's own keyboard shortcuts area, but that doesn't trigger the "Autofill" function, it just opens 1Passwords popup "Suggestions" window, which isn't nearly as convenient!

I've let the team know that you'd like to see the ability to restrict what apps Universal Autofill works with added to 1Password. While I can't make any promises, the team will consider the request for future updates.

For the time being, I recommend choosing a different keyboard shortcut that won't conflict with the other apps that you're using.

Thank you for the feedback and request. 🙂
