Hi all, one question - how can I unlock 1Password in the browser, when the 1PW.com cloud is passkey protected? It would be a bit annoying when I all the time would do need to process the QR code thing from my smartphone. I don’t mean the initial first login after install of X extension - but once i close the browser I’m logged out - but I don’t want to do QR code scan after each browser restart again and again. Any solutions? Would I be able to use the passkey from browser? Thanks

  • Hello @telephoneman2! 👋

Thanks for the question! The easiest way to unlock 1Password in the browser is to also have the desktop app installed so that the browser extension and the desktop app share a lock state. You'll then be able to unlock 1Password in the browser using biometrics instead of having to use the passkey each time:

If you don't have the desktop app installed then you'll either need to scan a QR code using your mobile device or use the provider that you've saved your passkey to on your desktop device. For example, if you're using a Mac then you can use iCloud Keychain to sign in into 1Password using your saved passkey.

Let me know if you have any questions. 🙂

Hi @Dave_1P Thanks - that means when using X only without desktop I can use the passkey which is stored in cloud of operating system or browser to unlock it? Or maybe even on yubikey? But the X instance is kept as "trusted device" as well? I don't need to rund the entire registration process in addition? Just the passkey unlock (after initial setup)? Thanks

Thanks for the reply. When clicking on the 1Password icon in your browser you'll see a pop-up open with a button that says Sign in with passkey:

Clicking that button will allow you to unlock 1Password using your passkey, whether it's stored in iCloud Keychain or on a YubiKey.

That being said, installing the desktop app and enabling biometric unlock will give you a much better experience. 🙂

@Dave_1P thanks - I know. But I have a computer here where it’s not allowed to install your Software. Just the extension is. So far I am forced to use this process. Don’t know if I can enable the passkeys in edge browser to get that login working. Is there any timeline when you allow to migrate from master password and key to passkey ?

I've just unlocked 1Password in Microsoft Edge using a passkey saved in iCloud Keychain with no issues. Let me know if you give it a try and it doesn't work for you.

Is there any timeline when you allow to migrate from master password and key to passkey ?

I don't have any timelines to share on when you'll be able to add a passkey to existing 1Password accounts. However the team is working hard to get the feature ready, if you'd like to give it a try then you can create a new individual account that can be unlocked using a passkey through our beta: Unlock 1Password with a passkey (beta)
