Is syncing a passkey across devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac) safe?

To sync a passkey across devices such as iPhone, iPad and Mac, it is saved in 1Password. i.e., it's uploaded to the 1Password server. Does that in any way compromise the security of the passkey?

Additional info for above: 1Password for Mac version 8.10.33. I don't know where to find the Extension version.

  • Hello @CharlesCaplan! 👋

Thank you for the question! Passkeys are generated by 1Password on your device using a public-private key pair and the underlying private key never leaves 1Password. Your items, including both passwords and passkeys, never leave your device without first being encrypted using two secrets that only you know:

    • Your account password.
    • You Secret Key.

Without both your account password and Secret Key, no one but you can access your saved passkeys. You can read more about 1Password's security here: About the 1Password security model

Let me know if you have any other questions. 🙂
