Windows app will not start - and how to fix it

On my Windows 11 PC, as others have reported, some times the 1password app will not start. I used the task manager to look for processes that were running, and found 3 or 4 of them. This happens when the app times out and locks, and then the app is killed. These processes are left running.

Go into the task manager, sort by name, right click on the 1password tasks, and click "End". Once they are gone the app runs again. I hope this helps anyone who is experiencing this problem.

  • Hi @wbphelps, thanks for taking the time to share your workaround for this issue! We do apologise for any inconvenience caused here.

Would you be willing to try following the steps below to disable hardware acceleration in the app, and then keep an eye for a while to see if the failure to launch the app after it locks automatically still occurs?

    1. Open and unlock 1Password 8.
    2. In the top left of the window, next to the word 1Password, click ⋮ > Settings > Advanced.
    3. Uncheck the option to Use Hardware Acceleration.
    4. Fully quit the app with Ctrl + Q or from ⋮ > Quit.
      • It's important not to skip this step as a full restart of the app is required for this setting to take effect.

I look forward to hearing from you!

I did disable Use Hardware Acceleration and that does seem to have solved the problem, thank you.

  • Hi @wbphelps, I'm glad to hear that disabling hardware acceleration seems to have helped! If the issue returns at any point while this setting is still disabled, don't hesitate to reach back out and we'll be happy to look into things further 😄
