1Password doesn't distinguish between servers in a single domain

I've been using 1Password for years and love it, but one of it's limitations has been driving me nuts lately.

I'm the network administrator my work network, which involves dozens of internal server web management consoles (vCenter, firewalls, KVM switches, load balancers, certificate renewals, etc.) When prompted to log in to any of these consoles, I click the 1Password icon and am presented with a list of literally every login for my entire domain, rather than the specific login for the specific server.

How can I get 1Password to pay attention to the hostname AND the domain rather than just seeing the domain name portion and making a huge assumption that all my 1Password entries are logins for the same website?

For example:

Logging into vcenter.domain.com pops up passwords for vcenter.domain.com, firewall.domain.com, loadbalancer.domain.com, etc.

This happens in the current web browser plugins for Firefox and Chrome, in Windows and Mac. I'm pretty sure it's been like this for all versions I've ever used.

1Password Version: 8.10.35
Extension Version: 2.24.2
OS Version: Windows 11
Browser: Firefox

  • Hello @essambk, thank you for writing in.

You can adjust the Autofill behaviour rules on specific Login items using the 1Password desktop app. Here's more information on that -> Change where a login is suggested and filled.

    1. Open and unlock the 1Password desktop app.
    2. Locate your Login item and click "Edit".
    3. Click the "Autofill behaviour" rule button beside the website URL and choose the "Only fill on this exact domain" option.
    4. Click "Save".

I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

    Hi @EvonG1P

    Thanks for the quick response!

I've made the change in the 1Password desktop app, but the web plugin doesn't seem to realize the setting has changed. I forced a reload of the page, restarted the browser, even tried restarting the PC, but the web plugin is still giving me the entire list of domain logins.

Do I need to make the change to all of the entries of the same domain for it to work?

  • Hey @essambk! No problem at all, and I apologize for not providing additional details. Yes, you have to adjust this option on all Login items with the same domain.

Let me know how things go.

    Thanks for clarifying, @EvonG1P!

I wish I had thought to ask about this issue dozens of passwords ago!

  • You're very welcome, @essambk. That's alright; I completely understand! Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with. 🙂
