Feature: Sharing a login/pwd in secret

Hi! I've seen this feature/function in the past at one of your competitors.
Sharing an account (login/pwd to a site or service) without the recipient actually seeing the password. The current sharing link reveals the password which is sometimes undesired.
Any thoughts on this? And apologies if this has been raised before, I admit I gave up searching for similar topics.

Regards,
Zsolt

  • Hello @DVZs! 👋

If you're using 1Password Business then you can control whether your recipient is able to view a password by using the View and Copy Passwords permission. You can read more here:

However, you should consider this feature to be a deterrent but not a guarantee that the people that you share the password with won't be able to ever view the password. Our permissions only apply to the 1Password apps and not to other apps like the browser. If they use 1Password in the browser to fill the password into a website then they could use a tool like Chrome's Developer Tools to view the filled password on the webpage. You can read more about the limitations of this permission here: How vault permissions are enforced in 1Password accounts

I believe that the same limitations will apply to other password manager's implementation of this "hide password" feature as well.

If you're using an individual account or 1Password Families then, at the time of writing, the View and Copy Passwords permission is not available for those accounts. I would be happy to file a feature request on your behalf, can you tell me a little more about why you'd like to be able to hide a password while still sending it to someone so that I can share those details with the team?

    Hi Dave,

Glad to hear the feature exists - at least Business users.
I know there is no 100% solution for this (like you mentioned browser's developer tools, etc).
The idea of letting someone access your account (whichever website, foodordering sites, etc) is something that comes up now and then. However I would not want to actually give out my password to anybody.

Anyways, thanks for getting back to me.
Do you know if the mentioned permission will (ever) be available for individual users?

    Regards,
    Zsolt

I'm afraid that's an unknown situation at this time. Our products team makes choices like that assuming of course that the needed backbone from the development team is in place. I've take the liberty of filing a feature request on your behalf.
