new set up a recovery key question

Just read your blog on setting up a new recovery key code. How is this different from having the secret key? I thought by having the secret key you would be able to recover your account. Is this just an extra layer to accomplish the same thing. Just thinking that if I setup a new recovery code, it would probably stored in the same place as my secret key. If not I could just store my secret key in 2 separate places. Thanks

The Secret Key is half of the encryption of your data. It cannot be used to recover your account.

The recovery key is just what the name implies, a means to recovery your account should you forget your password, for example.

I would encourage you to create the recovery code and keep it safe. I use a three stored location approach. My entire digital life is in 1Password.

    1. Home - floor safe. Local and ease of access.
    2. Relatives - safe. Semi local, ensures access if an unfortunate situation happens to my home or while traveling should the need arise.
    3. Bank safety deposit box. Limited access but available if something should happen to both of our homes.
