Why Your Shared Vaults Might Not Appear on Some Devices

I had a shared vault that did not appear on iOS v8 on my wife's iPad and iPhone. The iPhone has 1Password 7 and it appears there. The iPad does not have an earlier version. The iPad was completely erased and just installed clean this morning.

At the first login to 1Password the account being used was a guest account in the shared vault. It wasn't working so logged out and logged back in.

It still wasn't working so I then upgraded the account to be a full family member. It still wasn't working. I tried logging out and logging in.

It still was not working so I uninstalled and reinstalled the app. It's still not appearing.

I uninstalled the app, cold booted the iPad and reinstalled and it still wasn't working.

I hadn't even tried the iPhone 1Pass v8 because I knew it's going to be the same issue.

Then for some reason my old troubleshooting skills came back to me, and I started poking around on the website for both accounts. Finally, I saw it. My wife had two accounts with the same email address. In all my years in IT (over 25), it never occurred to me that a tech company as savvy as 1Pass would allow two accounts with the same email/login id. Then I realized the delta must be in the secret code.

I was befuddled why my wife didn't receive an email when I upgraded her to the family. I can only assume this was the case because of the duplicate accounts with the same email. Something prevented a notification from going. The 1Pass v7 app DID get notifications and maybe that's why no email was sent. That also got me realizing what was going on.

After recovering her account, because neither of us had any idea what the password was for the Family account, everything started working as expected.

So, the lesson here is to watch out for multiple accounts with the same email ID. The UI itself is too slick to make it obvious to you that you're signed into multiple accounts like on her 1Pass 7 client. Ideally, when you go to login to an account on a new device 1Pass would say "HEY, you have two accounts with this email address, would you like to login to both?" But it doesn't so heads up!

  • 1Password is capable of allowing the user access to multiple account. I've had quite a few signed in at times. Some folks use those same email addresses across accounts.

    The Secret Key would be different between accounts as you mentioned. Shared vaults would only appear if you were accessing the account they were shared with.

    If the password is the same across both accounts you can access both at the same time.
