Expected latency for "Did you sign in...."

Typically, signing in on a new device triggers a confirmation query in a short amount of time. Yesterday evening about 11pm my wife received a "Did you sign in on a new device..." email from 1Password and she hadn't touched her phone for hours, so was alarmed. I checked...she had used her iPhone to go to a website and create a new login, adding it to 1Password nearly 24 hours prior. The email gave the exact IP address of her iPhone (as listed in Trusted Devices) and cited the device as the Safari extension, so I knew all was fine.

My questions are – why did it take that long to trigger the email, and is this expected behavior. Thanks.

  • Hello @LarryMcJ! 👋

Thank you for reaching out. That sort of delay doesn't seem normal, usually you should receive the email almost immediately. So that the team can look into this further, could you have your wife send an email to support+forum@1Password.com using the email address associated with her 1Password account. Include a link to this thread in the email.

After emailing in, you'll receive a reply from BitBot, our friendly robot assistant with a Support ID that looks something like [#ABC-12345-678]. Post that here, and I'll be able to locate your message and make sure it's gotten to the right place. 🙂

Sadly, that won't work. She just doesn't have the tolerance to pursue this, so I'm not going to force the issue. To my knowledge, of the hundreds of these we've received over the years, most seem to come within minutes, but still...having one come a day later is an alarming sign that it might be someone else who caused it. But I'm not worried because her IP address in this case matches her iPhone, and she absolutely did use the Safari extension on her iPhone, which in itself, is rare. I know there's nothing bad going on.

I'll keep an eye out for further reports of this behaviour so that we can investigate further on our end. If you notice this happening again then please let me know.
