Logging in to icloud.com is not possible when there is a choice of a passkey or password.

If the 1Password extension is not on, and I try to log in to icloud.com, I fill the panel of Apple, fill in my name, return, and I get a panel with a choice between login or passkey (two buttons "continue with Password" and "Sign in with Passkey"). I usually use the passkey.

When the 1Password extension is on, I try the same, the panel of apple does not change after return. I am stuck and cannot login.

I tested this with Chrome with the 1Password extension being the only extension "on" or "off" (I usually do not use Chrome). Likewise, I have tried this also with a Chromium based browser (Arc) and the effect was exactly the same. Finally, I have also tested this on Firefox, and the bug is identical.

If I test this with Safari, things works, which seems to indicate that the bug is the extension (I presume the safari extension is a very different code).

To be sure, I also tried to login to another site where passkey is enabled via 1Password (adobe) and the login mechanism workd perfectly

1Password Version: 8.10.36
Extension Version: 2.26.1
OS Version: macOS 14.5
Browser: Chrome, Firefox, Arc

  • Hello @iherman! 👋

I'm sorry that you're running into issues when signing into icloud.com in Chrome on your Mac. I've just tested this and I can't reproduce the issue. Can you update the following and then try again:

If you can still reproduce the issue with the latest versions then let me know and I can investigate further. 🙂

    Dear @Dave_1P

Alas! This has not improved things.

    • MacOS: I have updated a few days ago: Sonoma 14.6.1
    • Chrome browser: 127.0.6533.120 (just updated)
    • 1Password Nightly – Password Manager extension 8.10.44.6, synced with 1Password for Mac 8.10.40. I have reinstalled the extension and it is the only extension running in Chrome. The Desktop version has just been updated.

Unfortunately, things as are I described with this setup as well.

    @iherman

Thank you for the reply. Here is what I see when I test with 1Password in the browser enabled in both Chrome and Brave:

    1. I go to https://www.icloud.com/
    2. I use 1Password to fill my email address from the suggestions menu that appears below the email address field and submit the email address.
    3. The macOS passkey prompt appears and I'm asked to scan a QR code using another device.
    4. I scan the QR and authenticate the QR code using my iPhone and I'm signed in.

Aside from step 2, where you would type in your email address manually, is this what you see when you sign in to icloud.com with 1Password turned off?

    Can you also tell me:

    1. Are you clicking Autofill from the 1Password pop-up in the toolbar to fill your email address? Or are you clicking on the suggestion menu that appears below the email address field?
    2. Can you reproduce the issue in an incognito window in Chrome?

I look forward to hearing from you.

    @Dave_1P,

Instead of trying to make elaborate descriptions of what happens and what should happen, I thought of doing two screen recordings with QuickTime instead. I hope that is fine with you. I have put the two recordings to my shared pCloud space.

[1] shows what I expect should happen. It runs on an empty Chrome instance, i.e., without any extensions. As you can see, I type in my login name, push the little gray arrow, and I get a screen with a choice among different possibilities for logging in. I did not log in, but I know I could, I have done that before.

[2] shows what happens when the 1Password extension is switched on (but still as the only extension). As you can see, 1Password behaves as expected insofar as it shows me login possibilities, and I can choose the right one. After that, I would expect to be able to click on the small gray arrow after the login to go to the next step, but it is as if that arrow was not active as a push button. (Which made me think, maybe the bug is around the UI which deactivates the right arrow...)

Finally, answering to your question: when running everything in an incognito window, it indeed works exactly like [1]. Is it so that the extension is automatically switched off in an incognito window? (I did not realize that, I do not use incognito very often...) Because it is then consistent with [1]...

I hope this helps in locating the issue!

    Thanks for listening :-)

    Ivan

Just one more thing, maybe it is relevant: I copy here my screen dump of the 1Password entry for my iCloud login (I have hidden some personal information in it). I do not know whether it helps, but here it is.

  • @iherman

Thank you for taking the time to post the screen recording and for the additional information. I've done some more testing and I can reproduce the same issue when using the nightly version of 1Password in the browser, the same version that you mentioned using. An internal issue has been filed with our development team to investigate this further.

For the time being there are two workarounds:

    1. Use the stable version of the 1Password extension instead of the nightly: 1Password – Password Manager - Chrome Web Store
    2. When filling your login, don't click on the suggestion in the filling menu that appears below the email field on iCloud.com. Instead, click on the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar and click Autofill there. That seems to avoid the issue.

Let me know if you any questions.

Thanks @Dave_1P, I am happy you could reproduce the issue, it will help in finding the bug. That is the way software developments goes :-)

I will try the second workaround, but, in fact, I can get to my icloud if I use Safari, which seems to entirely bypass the issue. I do not directly log in to icloud, so it is not a major problem for now. I guess, at some point, the issue will magically disappear when I will have an update of 1Password...

Thanks for all the work you put in this software. It has become an essential part of my online existence...

  • Thanks again for reporting the issue, and for the kind words about 1Password. 🙂
