1password extension forcing the app to be in the foreground all the time

When the extension is enabled, and I'm in chrome, the application in the foreground is 1Password. It prevents me from typing in chrome. I can only type this because I disabled the extension.

If I try to quit 1Password, it just restarts immediately. It eventually quits if I hold Cmd-Q, but then as soon as I click around in the browser, or click the extension icon on the toolbar, it comes right back. This makes the extension completely unusable.

I have a screen recording if that would be helpful.

1Password Version: 8.10.38
Extension Version: 2.26.1
OS Version: Sonoma 14.5
Browser: Chrome

  • Hello @richunger! πŸ‘‹

I'm sorry that you're unable to type into Chrome when 1Password in the browser is enabled. You mentioned that you have a screen recording and that would help me to better understand the situation. Please send an email to support+forum@1Password.com with a link to this thread.

After emailing in, you'll receive a reply from BitBot, our friendly robot assistant with a Support ID that looks something like [#ABC-12345-678]. Post that here, and I'll be able to locate your message and send you a secure upload link for your screen recording. πŸ™‚

I am having this exact same issue.
It's so broken, I'm considering leaving 1password for how many problems I've had with 1password in the past year. This is insane, and makes my computer basically impossible to use.

(When 1Password steals focus, there is no pop-up, prompt, or other window. It's just stealing focus from the browser without displaying anything.)

Not sure if you did something on the server side or if just disabling the extension for a while did it, but it seems to have corrected itself.

  • @richunger

I'm glad that you're not longer seeing the issue. If you do run into further problems then please respond to the email that my colleague sent you and the team can investigate further.

I too am experiencing problems with 1 Password in both Chrome and Safari. When 1 Password is activated, I can no longer type any URLs in the search bars of either browser.

Seeing the same. The screen grab above from t3rminus shows exactly the same as I see here.

Also - quitting 1password via the menu or via right click on the icon on the dock - it simply restarts.

The only way out is to quit it from the task bar icon top right.

Tried it in chrome, arc, firefox and safari - same for all of them

Can also mention - this is the same on all 3 macs I have access to.

Something I am not entirely sure is related or not - all 3 were just updated to 14.6 then 14.6.1 sonoma.

I experienced the same issue after an update to 14.6.1 Sonoma, with Arc 1.55.0 and 1Password 8.10.38. After repeatedly quitting 1Password from the dock (it kept restarting), I was able to click enough times in Arc to regain focus; disabling the 1P extension for a while and then re-enabling it seemed to prevent the issue re-ocurring.

Is there a fix being worked on for this? I'm resorting to having to use my Google Password Manager which makes me wonder why I need 1Password in the first place.

I'm sorry that you're seeing 1Password take focus from your browser. This is a known issue with the latest version of 1Password that our developers are currently working to resolve and involves the connection between the desktop app and 1Password in the browser. You should be able to workaround the issue by following these steps:

Option 1: Make sure that you're signed into the 1Password app and then reset app integration

    1. Open and unlock 1Password for Mac.
    2. Make sure that you are signed into the app: How to add another 1Password account to the apps and browser extension
    3. Click on 1Password next to the ο£Ώ in the menu bar.
    4. Click Settings.
    5. Click Browser.
    6. Toggle the "Connect with 1Password in the browser" setting.

Option 2: Turn off app integration if the first workaround doesn't work

    1. Open your browser.
    2. Right-click on the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar and click Settings.
    3. Click General.
    4. Turn off "Integrate this extension with the 1Password desktop app".

Let me know if you still see the issue after following these steps.

It seems that finally getting authenticated with 1Password is what fixed it for me. Not entirely sure how I got to the point of getting a login prompt (to be honest, 1Password has gotten to a point to where I'm not entirely sure what it is doing most of the time).

I was gonna add a screenshot, but it appears as though the rich text editor on this forum doesn't work with Firefox.

Bad day to be a 1Password customer, I guess.

I'm sorry that you're unable to attach an image. I've tested this and I'm able to attach an image using Firefox, what happens when you try to attach an image using the following:

Are you able to attach an image in a Private window? Or in another browser?

Any word on a fix for this?s This is embarrassing for 1Password.

  • @whisperwow

Thank you for following up. The team is currently testing fixes in the beta versions of 1Password for Mac and 1Password in the browser. As soon as testing is complete we hope to release the fix to the stable version as well. If you'd like to get your hands on the fix quicker you can switch to the beta:

I'm sorry for the impact to your workflow.

  • Hello everyone,

The team has released some fixes for issues where 1Password would get focused unexpectedly, can you update to 8.10.46:

If you still see the issue after updating to 8.10.46 then let me know and I can help further. πŸ™‚
