using 1PW in 3rd party app, how??

Recently I have been having much difficulty in using 1 Password from my iPad. The most recent example is trying to use 1PW from the Parcel app. Periodically I need to re-enter my Amazon credentials. Previously when the web window opened within Parcel I was able to select a field labeled Passwords and it permitted me to access 1PW. Now I do not see the Passwords field instead I have to select Autofill and then Passwords which does not seem to recognize 1PW.

Something on iPadOS & iOS appears to have changed. The developer for Parcel says he has not control over what I am seeing as far as accessing 1PW. So how do I get access to 1PW from these web windows opened within 3rd party apps.

Also how should I be using 1PW from Safari??

1Password Version: 8.10.38
Extension Version: 2.26.1
OS Version: iPadOS 17.6.1
Browser: Safari

  • Hello @gct3o! 👋

Thank you for reaching out. There is indeed currently an issue in iOS where double-tapping on a field and then tapping AutoFill > Passwords will not respect your password manager selection from Settings > Passwords > Password Options (where you chose to use 1Password) and will instead bring up iCloud Keychain regardless of your selection. If you don't have anything saved in iCloud Keychain, you'll just see an empty list.

We've reported the issue to Apple and are developers are staying on top of the situation. For now, you'll need to use the "Passwords" prompt above the keyboard instead.

When you tap on the username or password field in an app you should see a "Passwords" prompt appear above your keyboard. Are you not seeing that prompt inside of the Parcel app?

    Hi Dave,
I do indeed look for the "Passwords" prompt or for the icon of a key. This seems to be the primary mechanism I had been using. Unfortunately I am not seeing the "Passwords" prompt above the keyboard in the Parcel app. So this is the source of the issue I am reporting. I think it is also likely that I have had this issue with other apps as well as within Safari. Perhaps not consistently.

Just recently I also had a similar issue occur when I was attempting to pay for parking from my iPhone. The parking lot had a QR code that I scanned using the QR reader in Control Center on my iPhone. This brings up what feels like a web browser window and I had to enter my license plate number and a credit card into the window in order to park. There was no "Password" prompt so I had to leave this window to copy the information from 1PW and then re-enter this information after going through the QR code dance a second time (thanks to Apple not opening this window in Safari, or giving me the ability to do so).

Thank you for those details. I can see how the current behaviour is not ideal for the particular apps (such as Parcel) you're having trouble with. AutoFill is specifically handled by iOS so 1Password is unable to control when the "Passwords" prompt appears above the keyboard since the detection of fields, and rendering of the "Passwords" prompt, is handled entirely by iOS. 1Password only provides the data for the experience.

I recommend reporting the issue to the developers of the apps in question so that they can investigate why iOS isn't recognizing the login fields in their apps and get that fixed.

Sometimes if the "Passwords" prompt doesn't appear when you tap on the username/email field, it will if you tap on the password field in an app or website. That might work for some cases that you're running into. If the prompt doesn't appear at all then copying and pasting your login information from 1Password is the best option: Copy and fill passwords into apps that don't work with 1Password

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Dave,
Before I reached out to you all I reached out to the Parcel app developer. He said that the appearance of the Autofill “key” icon is not under his control. Being in the middle of 2 developers and Apple is painful some times. I’m sure you all will keep trying on your end. If things get worse I’ll start squeaking some more.

I'm sorry for the frustrating situation. If it helps, here's Apple's documentation for app developers:

Forwarding that to the developer of the app that you're using might provide them with some insight into why the iOS Password AutoFill prompt isn't appearing in their app.
