Store 1password passkey in Bitwarden?

I am a fan and promoter of 1password and currently do not use Bitwarden or any other manager. I am also a fan of Yubikey's Bio Series:

I have successfully created and tested a passkey beta account using an existing 1Password account.
I wonder whether there is a way to have Bitwarden handle the passkey, and have 1Password handle everything from there:

1) With the loss of Authy desktop and the shift towards passkeys, I would be prepared to make an even deeper commitment to 1Password to handle username/password/TOTP/passkeys across the board and especially during an expected long transition to passkeys.
2) My family has multiple iPhones/iPads/Mac's/Windows in the wild and I need a secure cross platform solution with redundancy for loss/theft. (Especially theft of active unlocked devices.)
3) As a long-time 1Password and Yubikey user, I would prefer as part of the passkey rollout that 1Password would natively support the Yubikey Bio series beyond new installations and (like Bitwarden post logout) require password (what I know), Yubikey (what I have), and Bio series (what I am).
4) I am leery of being overly committed to an Apple, Google, or Microsoft centric solutions.
5) Barring that, I wonder whether the best solution would be Bitwarden with Yubikey to store/unlock the 1Password passkey and have 1Password then handle everything else.

Is there a better workflow solution that I am missing? With thanks in advance!

    Experimenting with passkey logon:
Is there a way to store the 1Password login passkey in Bitwarden? I have tried with no success.

    1) I would like to deepen my commitment to 1Password post the loss of Authy desktop and the advent of passkeys. I would be prepared to have 1password handle logon/password/TOTP/passkey for all accounts stored in appropriate vaults.
    2) Within my family we have iPhones, iPads, Mac's, and Windows aplenty out in the wild so I am looking for a very secure cross platform workflow with redundancy to allow for loss/theft.
    3) I would be prefer to have 1Password simply support Yubikey Bio Series and require it for every login/unlock (as Bitwarden does post logout) such that "something I know" is password, "something I have" is Yubikey, and "something I am" is fingerprint.
    4) Barring Yubikey support, my thought is use Bitwarden to store and unlock the 1Password passkey, and then have 1Password handle everything from there.

Is this possible, or is there a superior workflow solution that I am missing?

    With thanks!

    Hello @fstest! 👋

Thank you for reaching out! You can save the passkey that you use to unlock 1Password in the provider of your choice, see this support guide for details: Unlock 1Password with a passkey (beta)

I usually recommend using a platform provider to store your passkey for 1Password since it's already there on your devices but you can use any provider that supports passkeys. Or you can save your passkey on a hardware security key. Just make sure to save your recovery code to prevent being locked out of 1Password: Generate and use recovery codes

Let me know if you have any other questions. 🙂

I would suggest just looking at 1Password directly rather than using Bitwarden here. I'm not sure what Bitwarden brings to the table in this setup, besides the fact it has non-beta (?) passkey-to-unlock functionality?

I took a look at Bitwarden's passkey-to-unlock support and it's not nearly as good as 1Password's. With 1Password you use the passkey to unlock; you don't need a password anymore. There is no hidden 'password' that appears sometimes. Not true with Bitwarden, in many circumstances you'll end up prompted for the Bitwarden password, not the passkey, in various parts of the interface. You can't use it with "just a passkey."

You might be struggling with the lack of support for both biometric + PIN together with the Yubikey Bio. That is indeed a current limitation of the Bio Yubikey. You might want to contact Yubikey and voice support for PIN + biometric - I know I'd certainly like it.

  • Thank you for adding your voice b36411. 🙂
