Feature Request: Multi-Line Password Field / Hidden Notes Field

It would be nice if we were able to have a Secrets field type that is hidden-by-default like the password field type but supports large amounts of multi-line text like the notes/text field type.

At my organisation we often have to store secrets such as gpg or tls public/private key pairs. These secrets are in the standard base64 multi-line (PEM/armored) format, so often take up a few dozen lines each. We currently use the text field type for storing these, but that comes with a few drawbacks.

If you open up the secret, the text field is visible by default with no option for hiding it like the password field. So, the public/private key are completely visible at all times. It would be better if it was hidden by default with the option to copy to clipboard without revealing so we can paste it into a terminal session with whatever system we're configuring.
Additionally, as text fields display the entire secret at all times, if you have multiple large multi-line text fields within the same secret, it can be inconvenient to have to scroll past the entire field before being able to copy from the second/third text field. If there was a multi-line password/hidden notes field that was able to collapse to a single obfuscated line like a concealed password field, then we would be able to see/interact/copy-from every field of the secret on a single screen without needing to scroll.

We have also considered the password field, but that field appears to flatten all multi-line secrets to a single line which is not viable for our use case. We have also considered the 'Attach a File' field, but that comes with the issue that we cannot copy the contents directly to clipboard to upload to a server and must first download it to disk which is not ideal.

  • Hello @deejayl! 👋

Thank you for the feedback! At the moment, storing that information in a notes field or as an attached document are the best options. However, I do see how something like a multi-line concealed field would be useful for situations like this and I've filed a feature request on your behalf with our product team.

Thank you for the detailed explanation of your use case and for helping us learn how we can make 1Password better for you. 🙂
