Feature request: Create UI path to manually create a Masked Email with Fastmail

Hi! The "Masked Email" integration with Fastmail is so great. What a great idea and partnership between the two companies.

https://support.1password.com/fastmail/

However, as pointed out in other threads here, for some reason, the 1Password browser extension (in Safari in my case) does not always detect when it's appropriate for the "new masked email" feature to be triggered:

https://1password.community/discussion/136207/how-to-trigger-masked-email-prompt
https://1password.community/discussion/127646/fastmail-masked-email-creation-in-1password-extension

That is, the browser extension doesn't always "see" the email field in the form. I totally understand that form detection and analysis is probably SUPER complicated and the 1P team is probably the best in the world at this. That said, until this detection issue is figured out, I propose…

Creating a path to manually trigger the "create a new masked email" flow. For example, by adding an option under the "+ New item" button. So you could click:

1P > New item > Masked email

This would be similar to

1P > New item > Login

…except that the "email" field would be pre-filled with an auto-generated masked email.

With that UI flow in the browser extension (and main standalone apps) would make this feature much more accessible.

Bonus: Currently when following the New item > Login path, when prompted for an "email" the dropdown suggests recently used emails. I would also expect that list (maybe at the top of that list!) to include a "new masked email" option.

1Password Version: 1Password for Mac 8.10.40 (81040031)
Extension Version: 2.27.1
OS Version: Mac OS 14.6.1
Browser: Safari 17.6

  • Hello @scott2023! 👋

Thank you for the feedback! When I do run into cases where I have to create a masked email alias manually, I jump to the Fastmail web app by clicking a bookmark for the following URL: https://app.fastmail.com/settings/masked

That being said, I can see how it would be beneficial to integrate a manual masked email creation option into 1Password itself so that you can gain the benefits of that integration. While I can't make any promises, I've filed a feature request on your behalf.

You mentioned that there are websites where you're not seeing 1Password suggest a masked email alias. If you're able to post the addresses of those websites here I can file issues with our development team to get those fixed. 🙂

Thanks for the reply and for the idea to bookmark Fastmail's Masked Email URL. :)

Also I am happy to know this idea passed the test and is now a real feature request. :)))

What's easiest for you all when we (customers) come across sites where 1P isn't detecting the form elements as expected? Post on the forum here? Or use a "report an issue" ticket somewhere?

Most recently, the site that triggered this for me was:

    https://www.brooksrunning.com/en_us

1P does show "new masked email" from the regular create account form:

However, if you add something to your cart, then go to checkout, the "create account" option during the checkout flow does not show "new masked email":

Thanks for the reply! You can post any websites where 1Password doesn't suggest a masked email alias here on the forum and I, or one of my colleagues, can review the webpage and file an issue. If you don't want to post a website publicly then you can also reach the team via email at support+forum@1Password.com

The https://www.brooksrunning.com website that you've provided is interesting because the form that you're referring to doubles as both a sign in and sign up forum. If you click "Sign up" after manually filling in an email/password the website then opens another form and copies over the email address and password to the form in your first screenshot where you're asked to complete registration.

I've filed an issue with our team so that they can see how best to identify the email address field in a hybrid form of this sort. I've also noted that 1Password doesn't offer to generate a password for that form either. Thank you for the report!

+1 for the feature request. As it would be also great to have this in the Mobile application.

Thank you for the feedback! I've filed a feature request with the team. For the time being, bookmarking the following link so that you can quickly create a masked email alias in the Fastmail web app is the best option: https://app.fastmail.com/settings/masked

I would also like to add my request for this.
I've seen community posts from 2022 where this was raised and a feature request has been outsanding for that long.

This happens constantly on the modern internet. Correctly parsing all the different ways websites are setup is a nightmare for developers and I totally understand that. I don't mind creating new logins manually. But I want to use masked e-mail 99% of the time. I switched to 1Password specifically for their fastmail masked e-mail integration and I'd say >50% of the time I have to go to Fastmail directly to resolve this.

For reference BitWarden; which does not have an official partnership and just uses their API has a far superior interface and integration for this.

All I want is if I go to manually create an item or select any e-mail field in the app/extension to be given the option to create a masked e-mail.

There is absolutely no mention of masked e-mail in the Mac OS 1Password 8 application. I suspect you created this integration years ago, gave it plenty of fanfare at the time and have then neglected the feature and let it degrade to an almost unusable level. Pretty dissapointing really.

Frankly my whole 1Password experience has been mildly dissapointing; I'd be better off manually managing masked emails and going back to Dashlane, which in almost every other respect is superior.

Thank you for the feedback. As a Fastmail user myself, I feel your desire to see additional features and functionality be released for the masked email feature in 1Password. I'll make sure that your feedback is part of the internal conversation regarding the masked email alias feature.

For the time being, if you do encounter registration pages where 1Password fails to generate a masked email alias feel free to post the website address here or email it to support@1Password.com and we can file an issue with our development team to get that fixed. 🙂
