Getting Touch ID to work on my new Mac Studio?
I recently upgraded from a 2013 mac pro to a 2024 Mac Studio.. One of the features I was excited about was a keyboard with "Touch ID". EXCEPT, 1Password refuses to honor it.
Reading through the support forum I found I was not the only person with this issue, and that the cure was to simply uninstall 1Password and re-install it vs. just using the copy migration assistant moved over from the Mac Pro.
Okay, step one - move 1Password.app to the trash. "I'm sorry, Dave. I can't do that." Okay, it didn't say that, but it DID say, "The item “1Password.app” can’t be moved to the Trash because it’s open."
I've tried rebooting several times, checked my login items - Oh, wait, what are these two "Allow in background" entries? OKAY.. that fixed that. Remove 1Password.app, reboot.
I download and re-install 1Password installer, open preferences, and I still cannot enable the "Touch Id" under Security -> UNLOCK preference setting.
What might I be doing wrong here? I can only expect that my "uninstall" process is flawed in some respect?
Touch ID is working for OS login purposes, so I assume it is "working"..
Thanks for any input!
Sincerely,

Thanks so much for your time!

Sorry to hear that 1Password didn't agree on the Touch ID function on your setup.
Can you first update your 1Password 8 desktop app to the latest version of 8.10.44 to see if it helps:
If the issue persists, let's try reset your 1Password app. Here's what to do:
⚠️ Make sure that you have an up to date copy of your Emergency Kit or another device where you are signed into 1Password to hand, as you may need to enter all of your account credentials to re-add your account to the 1Password app after taking these steps.
- Open 1Password and choose 1Password > Settings from the menu bar.
- Click "Advanced" in the sidebar, then click "Reset 1Password".
- Review the information in the pop-up, then click "Reset 1Password".
- The next time you open 1Password, you’ll be asked to sign in to your account and will be prompted to set up unlock with Touch ID.
Let me know how it goes.

Hi Kevin,
Thank you, this ALMOST fixed it - the missing step was to reset 1Password, THEN REBOOT the OS, THEN, as you suggested, 1Password asked me if I wanted to use TouchID.
All is well!
Thanks for the pointer in the right direction!

Now that I've had this "enabled" for a few hours - it comes to light that the TouchID feature here does not quite work the way it does on my laptop. Let's face it - 95% of our "please enter password" use is in a browser, and using the SAME BROWSER EXTENSION as my macbook pro, I'm right back at the same place.. I'm asked to type my lengthy master pasword and not given an option to use TouchID..
Soooo.. I don't know where to turn from here - examining the browser extension settings doesn't reveal any sort of "use TouchID option", it just doesn't show up..
Desktop Firefox browser extension: 2.27.1
Laptop Firefox browser extension: 2.27.1Having to say "firefox" made me do a few experiments with other browsers...
Same behavior on Google Chrome. On the laptop, first offer is TouchID, on the Mac Studio, NO WAY to use TouchID from the browser extension.
Thanks for any thoughts - should I perhaps file a bug report or some such?
Sincerely,

I'm sorry that Touch ID still isn't working. So that I can better understand the situation can you tell me the following:
- Can you still use Touch ID to unlock the Mac itself?
- Can you still use Touch ID to unlock the 1Password desktop app (not the browser extension)?
- If you open the desktop app, click 1Password next to the in the menu bar > Settings > Browser > Is "Connect with 1Password in the browser" turned on?
I look forward to hearing from you.

Yes and yes and NO.. More tests, hang on.. Likely need to reboot again to get all this synchronized..
More in a moment or two..

Okay, I'm back after various repeated tests.. It appears I can't get my browser extensions to connect with 1Password except "manually"? Hard to explain - there's a way to invoke password from the typical
challenge fields - that button does not work in any browser, and I get this in 1Password:This sort of dialog:
(1password button does not work)And it settings, this warning:
I followed the instructions and found that In my attempts to remove 1password originally, there was an extensin helper being run from the trash - okay, empty trash, reconfigure, reboot.
Still no love. when I follow instructions, I get the correct path..
username@Mac-Studio ~ % /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -dump| grep '.path.1Password Browser Helper'
path: /Applications/1Password.app/Contents/Library/LoginItems/1Password Browser Helper.app (0x2a44)
username@Mac-Studio ~ %In the browser I CAN get 1Password to work, by invoking the tool bar icon and typing in my main passcode. But again, there is no TouchID choice being presented.
Sorry if this is confusing - I'm trying hard to figure out what's going on without pestering you too much, but for some reason it APPEARS that my browser helpers are not correctly connecting with 1Password even though I'm prettys ure I have all the correct setting enabled.
Thanks so much!

Thanks for the reply. You don't need to add Firefox and Chrome as "additional browsers" since they're already supported out of the box. I recommend that you remove them from that window. Then try these steps:
- Close all open web browsers.
- Right-click on the 1Password icon at the top of your Mac's screen and then click Quit. Wait until the icon disappears.
- Double-click on 1Password from your Mac's Applications folder.
Then check the following:
- Open your browser.
- Right-click on the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar and click Settings.
- Make sure that "Integrate this extension with the 1Password desktop app" is turned on.
Can you use Touch ID to unlock 1Password in the browser now? If you still can't then do you see a green dot in the extension settings? Or a different coloured dot with an error message? Let me know and I can send you next steps.

Hello again! Sorry for the long delay - life intrudes..
So, yes, you have nailed it - the bowser extensions are NOT connecting.
The warning suggests that I be sure 1Password is up and running and UNLOCKED, then try to connect again. I have tried various permutations of opening ad unlocking 1Password.app, then trying to get the extension integration to work, but I cannot get the "connection" indicator to work/turn green.
I'm sort of at a loss at this point - I feel we are very close, but cannot see what the issue might be.
My browser extension version is: "1Password browser extension version 8.10.44.34"
My 1Password.app version is: "1Password for Mac 8.10.44 (81044034)"Thanks for continuing to help me work through this!
Sincerely,

SUMMARY:
Okay, the final resolution here is this:
Instead of "uninstalling" 1Password the process should be "RESET 1Password". When I uninstalled, I had to kill off the background processes. When I re-installed 1Password, it did NOT re-enable the background settings like you might expect from a fresh installation. This prevented the browser extensions from connecting properly in the background to the main 1Password.app application which SHOULD have been "allowed to run in the background"..
Anyway, re-enabling the background processes allowed the browser integration to connect and stay connected and now I get the sort of behavior I've come to expect - when in a browser, a quick click on the embedded 1Password link in a password field brings up the TouchID dialog, which then works just as it does on my laptop.
So - when encountering my issue of TouchID not working correctly, do not 're-install', but rather, "reset" to solve the issue.
Thanks for the Agile team for being so patient with me!
Sincerely,
-ET-
