OTP - Device Based?

I moved from LastPass to 1Password over a year ago. I moved my OTP from different authenticators, particularly LastPass Authenticator to 1Password, but I found that in some cases, I cannot use the dynamically generated OTP from the 1Password for Windows app if I registered the OTP using 1Password for Android app (or viceversa) ... but that's not for all OTPs, just some.

So... are OTPs (or at least some of them) actually locked to the device used to register them? Would it be an issue if I change from one phone to another?

How can I differentiate them (the ones that depends on a specific device from the ones that does not)?

  • Hello @Nazul! 👋

Thank you for the question! The one-time password (OTP) generated by the 1Password app should be the same across all of your devices. An OTP is not locked to a specific device but is instead generated using a combination of the TOTP secret and the current time.

If you're seeing 1Password generate different OTPs on different devices then make sure that your time and date settings are correct on all devices. To check the date and time settings on all your devices, visit this website on each of your devices and make sure the time matches:

    https://time.is

If the date and time on a device doesn’t match, you can adjust it:

Let me know how this goes!

Thanks for the update. I think time is the same in all devices, but I'll double check. I recreate at least one of those OTPs that are behaving differently to test this out.

    Thanks again.
