Why don't 1Pass Passkeys work in Chrome MacOS when iCloud Keychain is disabled?

I'm on a work device running MacOS. I have the 1Pass app and extension installed (versions provided in post metadata). I've noticed that I cannot save Passkeys in Chrome using 1Pass and that I do not even get prompted to do so by 1Pass.

On my personal MacOS device, everything works as expected. I can create passkeys and sign in with them using 1Pass on Chrome.

The main difference, from what I can tell, is that iCloud Keychain is disabled on my work device.

When trying to use iCloud Passkeys, I get this error on my work device "Passkeys require iCloud Keychain, which has been restricted by a configuration profile."

Do 1Pass passkeys also rely on iCloud Keychain and is that why I can't use 1Pass to save and fill passkeys on my work device?

  • Hello @gareycb! 👋

I'm sorry that 1Password isn't saving or signing in with passkeys on your work device. Are you using a 1Password account provided by your workplace on your work device? If you are then can you reach out to your IT department to see if they've turned off passkey support for your workplace's 1Password account? Here is what your IT department can check:

If your IT department confirms that passkeys for 1Password aren't turned off, or you're using a 1Password individual or 1Password Families membership on your work device then let me know and I can help further.
