Is there any way to use a rectangular (as opposed to the regular square) aspect ratio image for a a custom icon for one of my saved items?

I used to be able to do it. But now when I load a rectangular icons, it just crops the middle square portion of it

  • Hello @zeror! 👋

Thanks for the question! Custom icons are best formatted when they're 512 × 512 (pixels) or at least 180 × 180 (pixels) in a square format. This matches the size/resolution of the rich icons that 1Password provides for many websites.

If you upload an icon that isn't square then, as you noted, 1Password will crop the icon so that it fits. This is done so that the entire icon placeholder is filled in rather than leaving an empty space.

Was there a reason why you wanted to add a rectangular icon? Is there a particular image that doesn't fit neatly into a square?

Hi Dave, I have an icon of a credit card. It looks weird if it's cropped. Not that big a deal really. Just a little OCD.

The upper credit card's icon is cropped. But for some reason, the bottom credit card shows the rectangular logo. They're both PNG files when I placed them into 1P

Thanks for the reply. If you create a 500px by 500px PNG image using an image editor like Photoshop then you can add the credit card to the centre of the image leaving space at the top and bottom of the image. Then 1Password will render an icon similar to the bottom icon in your screenshot when you add that PNG to an item in 1Password.

Alternatively, when you add a credit card to 1Password a rich icon will be automatically generated for many cards:
