Confused over 1Pasword, Safari, iOS, Mac Keychain
Hi There, I have ongoing confusion over 1Password in iOS and MacOS.
Questions
- Why does 1Password open Safari when filling passwords in Chrome?
- Can 1Password fully integrate with iOS so you don't have to open 1Password the app?
- Can password suggestions only come from 1Password and not from MacOS and iOS?
Essentially, what are the settings to get 1Password to fully integrate with MacOS and iOS so I'm never dealing with the OS and browser password systems?
Hope that makes sense.
Cheers, Ben
1Password Version: 8.10.30
Extension Version: 8.10.44.34
OS Version: 13.6.7
Browser: Safari & Chrome

Hello @sciascia! 👋
Thank you for reaching out! Let's focus on one platform at a time so that we avoid confusion starting with your Mac. To make sure that 1Password can fill and save passwords in all of your browsers make sure that you install the 1Password extension in all browsers:
You'll need to install the extension separately in all browsers. Next, make sure that you've turned off the built-in password manager in both Safari and Chrome on your Mac:
Let me know if you run into any issues. Can you also tell me if you see the following on your Mac or your iOS device?
Why does 1Password open Safari when filling passwords in Chrome?
I look forward to hearing from you.

@Dave_1P Thanks have followed those instructions and also followed all the instructions for my iOS devices.
With regard to using 1Password in Chrome opening Safari, this happens on MacOS only. I've since deleted the 1Password for Safari app, and reinstalled and re-connected.
Will see what happens.

Thanks for following those steps. Just in case you didn't see, for iOS you can follow this guide: Use 1Password to save logins and sign in to apps and websites on your iPhone and iPad
If you see Safari opening when filling password in Chrome on your Mac, or if you run into any other issues on either your Mac or iOS device, then let me know and I can help further. 🙂

Thanks for following up. Are you having trouble on your Mac, iPhone, or iPad with the Mail app? If it's on the Mac then try using Universal Autofill to fill your password:

Thanks for the reply. When you try to add your account to the Mail app which option are you choosing:
When you tap on either the email address or password field in the Mail app (try both) do you see the "Passwords" prompt appear above you keyboard? If you do then what happens when you tap on the "Passwords" prompt and then tap on your login?

@Dave_1P Thanks Dave. We've had to update all our email passwords so the accounts are existing.
When I go to Settings > Mail > Account. Then tap the password field, tap Autofill, tap Passwords, then 1Password opens and I can search for the mail account.
If tap the account, then tap the password, 1Password closes but it doesn't enter the password into the field - should it?
Obviously I can switch to the 1Password app and copy/paste the password. But I'm trying to understand if 1Password can be fully replace the keychain without having to switch to the 1Password app, unlock, then copy/paste the passwords.
Hope that makes more sense.
Cheers, Ben

When I go to Settings > Mail > Account. Then tap the password field, tap Autofill, tap Passwords, then 1Password opens and I can search for the mail account.
Are you tapping on the AutoFill option that appears in a menu near the field itself? Or are you tapping on the "Passwords" prompt that appears above your keyboard:
Can you try the option above the keyboard? If you're already using the "Passwords" prompt above the keyboard then can you post a screenshot of the passwords field that you're trying to fill in the Mail app? Make sure that nothing sensitive is visible in the screenshot.
