Can't Re-Name my Vault

In preparation for possibly migrating to a family membership, I'd like to re-name my vault from "Personal" to something more descriptive. When I Control-Click on the vault in the sidebar of the 1P App, I get greyed-out text that says "you can't edit this vault." Same story at 1P.com, though I can change the icon there.

Why?

  • Hello @rcornish! 👋

Thanks for the question. Each user in a 1Password membership has their own built-in Private/Personal vault which contains items that only they can see. Unlike other vaults the name of the Private/Personal vault cannot be changed. This is done so that this private vault isn't confused for a shared vault.

There isn't any need to rename the Personal vault before converting your account to 1Password Families. Your family members won't see your Personal/Private vault and they'll get their own Personal/Private vaults that you won't be able to see.

    Hi Dave....
Thanks for the explanation. One more question, if I may: If I move certain items off to the Shared vault, will I be able to search both my personal vault and the shared vault together (i.e. as if they were one vault)?

  • @rcornish

By default, the 1Password app will search through all of the vaults that you have access to. This includes both your Personal vault and the Shared vault. You'll see results from every vault in the same list.

You can limit to the search to a particular vault (or group of vaults) by using collections: Use collections to create custom groups of vaults
