Yubikey Password for Desktop App?

After only using the browser extension for all of my 1Password accounts, I decided to go ahead and install the Windows desktop app on my work PC to manage my brand new work-issued 1pwd identity.

I was able to log into the desktop app with my new work credentials without issue. Upon trying to sign into my personal account I ran into an issue. No matter what I do, it asks me to insert my 2FA key (a Yubikey 5 in this case), and then a windows-based prompt asks me for password. I tried it every which way, but now it warns me with the following two prompts. Not wanting to get locked out, I now ask for help.

I didn't think yubikeys had means of being password protected, so I am confused as to what's being asked of me.

OK, I am pretty sure it's the FIDO2 PIN on the key itself.

Follow-up question then - is my yubikey registered with 1pwd as a 2FA OTP device or something else? I usually log into 1password with secret + master pass + maybe plugging in the yubikey and touching the button, and have never been prompted for the PIN and I don't store credentials ON the key. So what's going on here?

  • @conspiracyx – We use the FIDO2 functionality of your YubiKey to serve as an authenticator for two-factor authentication for your 1Password account. We don't use one-time passwords from your YubiKey, but we do from an authenticator app, if you've set one up.
