Icons database

Where does 1Password get its list of icons for logins from? It did a “pretty good” job at choosing them but it missed some including one from Amazon which is surprising

I just noticed something even more strange with this. In the Windows 1Password app the icons are correct for the Amazon logo but in the iOS (iPadOS) they are not. Shouldn't they be matched and taken from the same icon database?

  • Hello @AZBigdog! 👋

Thanks for the question! 1Password uses a rich icons database that is curated and maintained by our development team. When you save a login in 1Password, the app on your device checks to see if an icon is available from one of our servers and downloads it to your device if it is. You can read more here:

You mentioned that the icon for Amazon differs between 1Password for Windows and 1Password for iOS on your end. To help me better understand the situation I'd like to ask you to take a screenshot of what you're seeing and attach it to your reply:

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for the quick reply. As for the icons not matching, I'm not sure what happened there as I looked again and they were now showing the correct Amazon icon. Maybe it just had to refresh in the app or ???

Anyway I have a sort of related question regarding icons. If I add a custom one (screen grab from the web) and use that JPG for a login, where does that actual file reside? In other words do I have to edit and save it on each device or does it get uploaded to my online profile and shared among all my devices or ???

    Thanks

Thanks for the reply! I'm happy that you're now seeing the correct icon on both devices. 🙂

Custom icons are encrypted and uploaded to your 1Password account and made available on all of your devices wherever you're using 1Password. So if you add a custom icon to an item on one device, you'll see that custom icon on your other devices.

I did notice it happen again only on my iPad but when I closed the app down and reopened it, they were Ok, so I think it was a refresh issue.

So I assume that once the icon gets uploaded yo me profile, I don't need to keep that jpg around anymore.

Dave, thanks again for your help

    Hi Dave,

I did add one custom icon myself for a login but it doesn't really fit into the space allocated for it in 1Password. Is there a preferred resolution for them? If so I could try resizing the JPG?

    Thanks

  • @AZBigdog

Custom icons are best formatted when they're 512 × 512 (pixels) or at least 180 × 180 (pixels) in a square format. This matches the size/resolution of the rich icons that 1Password provides for many websites.

Let me know if you have any other questions. 🙂
