Use 1Password to autofill Timemachine Password

Hi a bit of background.

  • I use my MacBook M2 as primary terminal for multiple clients. Whilst I use Apple Ecosystem for my own business I also support/work within multiple clients. For each of those clients I create a Parallels Desktop and this enables me to sandbox them in etc. I use 1Password rather than keychain as I need to take my passwords across multiple physical / virtual environments.
    Issue
Can / How do I use 1Password instead of Keychain to remember my "Timemachine" password. I'm looking to do that because in the past I have had challenges concurrently running Keychain and 1Passord.

Is anyone able to help please?

You can keep iCloud Keychain enabled on your Mac. This allows Time Machine (and other things) to save credentials, etc. This makes using the Mac and its services much more convenient.

But create/save the credentials in 1Password (and copy / paste when you configure Time Machine). There are typically two possible credentials: 1) Share permissions if the TM drives are not local, and 2) Backup encryption credentials. Keeping them in 1Password means you have them in the future, regardless of what happens to your Mac.

You should generally disable iCloud Keychain usage in Safari (Settings > AutoFill). This is likely where you were having trouble. You'll use 1Password for website credential filling.

So, two concepts here. iCloud Keychain used by macOS and various apps, and Safari's usage of iCloud Keychain. Just disable the latter.
