How to suppress "Use Suggested Password" dropdown?

Is there some 1Password setting/configuration combination that will prevent me from ever seeing the "Use Suggested Password" dropdown as shown here:

NOTE: I still want to be prompted with 'autofill suggestions when a form field is in focus' (as shown in my current autofill settings below), but I just don't want to see this generated password suggestion.

  • Hello @snoringelephant! 👋

Thanks for the question. There isn't a way to turn off suggested passwords without turning off the inline menu entirely which means that you wouldn't see login suggestions either. You can dismiss the suggested passwords prompt by pressing the esc key on your keyboard, would that work for you?

If that workaround isn't convenient then can you tell me a little more about why you don't want to have 1Password suggest passwords right on the page? The passwords that you see will be strong, unique, and crafted specifically for the requirements of the website that you're on. I've love to understand your workflow a little better so that I can pass along your request to the team.

Thanks for your suggestion regarding the esc key. I am definitely going to try that next time!

Also, thank you so much for your interest in understanding why I asked my question. This is a typical and wonderful type of response I get from 1Password support. Not only are you able to help me with my original question, but you go the extra mile to try to understand more of the context (presumably, in order to see if there is something more to learn about and/or improve the user experience).

The reason I don't want to see the suggested password is because I have had issues in the past with using the suggested password and then not having the String saved/updated in the correct 1Password entry. I have also seen when 1Password would create a new entry with this suggested password. Given that the suggested password is very complex and it is almost always obscured after if I select it (and I can't always be sure I will be able to cntl-C to copy the text because some sites won't let you do this), I am also nervous I will lose the text before I am confident it has been saved in the right place in 1Password.

For these reasons, I typically use the following steps in my flow when creating/updating password with generated passwords:

    • When I come across an entry field where I want to use a generated password, I stop what I am doing and open the 1Password app itself
    • If I don't already have a 1Password entry, I will create one in the desired vault
    • If I already have a 1Password entry, I will find and open the one I want to update (NOTE: I often have multiple accounts for the same site. For example, multiple twitter/bank/facebook/google/etc. accounts)
    • Once I am creating/editing the entry, I will generate a long password. I often hit the 'refresh' button when generating the password to pick one that has at least a couple of symbols.
    • After I am satisfied with the password (and other details I entered if I am creating a new entry), I save the 1Password entry
    • After I save the entry, I also copy the password to my clipboard in case I need to paste it
    • Next, I return to the window/app where I was originally prompted for the password
    • Many times, the 1Password dropdown already has been refreshed and/or 'knows' about my new entry and I am able to select it (which gives me great confidence that the password has been saved and I am able to retrieve it). If I don't see my new entry in the dropdown, then I just paste the new password from my clipboard (from the previous step).

I understand 1Password has the ability to create/update entries, but I have not had such a great experience in the past with the out-of-box flow. When I create a new entry, I like to capture all of the details (username, password, URL, security questions, etc.). Many times, the URL that is automatically saved isn't quite right because it contains extra parameters related to the session or it gets saved using the 'new' or 'register' context instead of the 'login' URL (and often sites change their login URL). So, I typically end up manually trimming the URL to the core domain name.

I feel better using my approach of using the 1Password app to add/create/delete my passwords manually and using the browser integration to only perform 'retrieval' operations. This way, I feel more confident about what is being saved in 1Password.

Again, thank you for your question and your quick reply.

@Dave_1P - I tried your suggestion of using the esc key and you are correct, it does remove the dropdown display.

While the suggestion does accomplish the original question of this topic (albeit temporarily rather than permanently), it brings to light another issue given the new account 'flow' I described in my previous comment above.

The issue I seem to observe is 1Password is not using/finding my newly-created 1Password entry when I am prompted to enter a password for a new account.

For example, I just discovered HuggingFace.co and I wanted to set up a new account. So, I followed the flow I outlined above and created a 1Password entry a priori and I want to use that entry for establishing the login credentials when prompted for it during the registration screen shown here:

As you can see, I get the "Use Suggested Password" dropdown which I can happily hit the esc key to cancel per your suggestion.

However, after I get rid of the suggested password dropdown, I want to use the password of the entry I just created as the password (instead of having to copy/paste it to/from the clipboard) and my new password entry does not show up when I select the little 1Password icon even though the extension knows about the matching website as shown here when I click on the extension icon:

Why doesn't the 1Password dropdown icon/tool show an existing, matching entry in this situation?

    Thanks.

@Dave_1P - I tried your suggestion of using the esc key to get rid of the suggested password and it worked as you indicated.

However, after using this approach, I encountered another potential issue after following the steps of my 'register new account' flow I mentioned in my previous comment above (which may belong in a separate discussion group, but I am too lazy to open a new topic and describe the flow again).

For example, after I hit esc to get rid of the suggested password dropdown, I was expecting 1Password to show me the new password I created for this new website I discovered:

However, when I click on the little 1Password icon dropdown 'tool' in the Password field, nothing is displayed (neither "Use Suggested Password" nor my newly-created 1Password entry).

The 1Password extension does know about the new entry and it seems to 'match' the website properly since when I click on the 1Password extension, I can see that it is showing the website as a "Suggestion" as shown here:

Why isn't 1Password prompting me for my saved password in this scenario?

NOTE: I understand I am still able to copy/paste the newly-created password to/from the clipboard, but I was trying to avoid this if possible since it would be easier to simply select the entry from the native 1Password icon dropdown like normal.

It seems 1Password is only written to "Use Suggested Passwords" when creating a new account.

When I am registering/creating a new account on a website, my modus operandi is to create the 1Password entry a priori. I do this because I want to make sure I capture all of the details about the login myself. I add notes, I shorten the URL of the website, I cycle through several different generated passwords, etc. I prefer to work this way because it gives me confidence the information is saved and ready to use before creating the account. (NOTE: I have described this 'flow' in a related community post here: https://1password.community/discussion/148706/how-to-suppress-use-suggested-password-dropdown)

In my previous post, I indicated I was too lazy to create a separate topic to address a related issue ... well, I guess I found the time to create this post (mostly because I have seen this behavior about 2-3 times since my previous post and would really like the behavior to change).

Here is my example (same example from previous post):

I want to register as a new user to huggingface.co , so I create a 1Password entry a priori with the credentials I want to use (as I mentioned above).

Next, I go through the steps to register as a new user and I get to the point where it wants me to enter a password as shown here:

The only thing the 1Password extension shows me is a 'Use Suggested Password' dropdown entry ... even though I have a password already saved for the website and is known by the extension as shown here:

May you please share this with the developers and see if there is a way for passwords being used for registering or creating new accounts can be shown in the dropdown box if they match the website?

NOTE: I don't have a screenshot of a 'change password' web form, but I believe the same applies (i.e. only the 'Use Suggested Password' is shown in the change password form field even though a 1Password entry exists).

    Thank you.

I'm sorry for the delay in responding, I've merged your threads together to keep the conversation in the same place. The behaviour that you're seeing is expected, basically the 1Password filling brain is analyzing the webpage and correctly identifying it as a sign-up page and not a login page. Because of this 1Password is offering to generate and save a new password since most users won't have created a login item for the page in question before signing up for the website.

Since a website isn't expecting existing login credentials when you visit its sign-up page, 1Password won't offer existing credentials. However, as you noted, you can fill (or copy and paste) your already saved sign-up credentials from the pop-up.

NOTE: I don't have a screenshot of a 'change password' web form, but I believe the same applies (i.e. only the 'Use Suggested Password' is shown in the change password form field even though a 1Password entry exists).

On password change pages 1Password will offer to fill your existing password into the "Current Password" field and will suggest a new random secure password in the "New Password" field.

I feel better using my approach of using the 1Password app to add/create/delete my passwords manually and using the browser integration to only perform 'retrieval' operations. This way, I feel more confident about what is being saved in 1Password.

Thank you for sharing your workflow and reasoning, I appreciate the detail that you provided and will share your experience with the team. We've recently built some improvements to how saving a password in the browser works and I'd like for you to give it a try to see if things work better for you now. Here's an example of how the process looks like on the website that you provided which would save you a significant number of steps from the process you described:

@Dave_1P - First of all, I absolutely loved your animated GIF showing the flow! How clever of you! It is much better than my (Boomer) series of screenshots. I'm going to have to figure out what kind of wizardly magic you used to do that.

Today, I noticed a message in my 1Password extension 'Start up' saying that I had "2 Steps Left" (which I was surprised since I consider myself a longtime user and thought I had everything set up).

It said I needed to "Practice the basics", so I decided to play along...

Next, as if the tutorial was written explicitly for me and this thread :), it walked me through the very steps you were trying to educate me about:

I will give it another try the next time I am creating an account.

    Thanks for your support!

  • @snoringelephant,

On behalf of Dave, you're welcome. Speaking of animated GIFs, I utilize the Cleanshot X app on my Mac to generate them. You can also use QuickTime to create a video instead: Record your screen in QuickTime Player on Mac - Apple Support.

Let us know if there's anything else we can help you with.
