New to passkeys for 1password

I would like to use passkeys with 1password. However, the only propositions given is to save them to the mac keychain or chrome. I can’t find how to configure chrome to include 1password even if it is an installed extension. Also, is there a way to shift older passkeys from Google passkeys already saved in the chrome browser or mac keychain?

1Password Version: 8.10.48
Extension Version: 8.10.48.25
OS Version: macOS 13.7 (22H123) Ventura
Browser: Chrome

  • Hello @Leahperso! 👋

I'm sorry that you're not being prompted to save passkeys in 1Password. As a first step make sure that you've installed 1Password in Chrome: Download 1Password for Your Browser

    Then follow these steps:

    1. Open your browser.
    2. Right-click on the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar and click Settings.
    3. Make sure that "Make 1Password the default password manager in this browser" is turned on.
    4. Click Autofill & save.
    5. Make sure that "Offer to fill and save passwords" and "Offer to save and sign in with passkeys" are both turned on.

Once that's done, follow these steps to turn off the built-in password manager: Turn off the built-in password manager in your browser

Also, is there a way to shift older passkeys from Google passkeys already saved in the chrome browser or mac keychain?

There isn't currently a way to transfer passkeys from one password manager to another and we're working with industry partners to create such a tool. For the time being, you'll need to sign into the services in question, remove the saved passkey from both the website and from your previous password manager, and then save a new passkey in 1Password: Save and sign in with passkeys in your browser

    Hi Dave,
Thanks for your quick and helpful response. I followed all your suggestions but saw the error message "Integration status: Connection problem
Please make sure the 1Password app is unlocked." My 1Password app was/is unlocked. Not sure what to do next. Could this be due to mulitible google profiles? 🤔

It sounds like the communication between the desktop app and 1Password in the browser isn't working. Try this:

    1. Open and unlock the 1Password for Mac desktop app.
    2. Click on 1Password next to the  in the menu bar.
    3. Click Settings.
    4. Click Browser.
    5. Make sure that "Connect with 1Password in the browser" is on.

Then reset app integration in the browser:

    1. Open your browser.
    2. Right-click on the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar and click Settings.
    3. Turn "Integrate this extension with the 1Password desktop app" off.
    4. Turn "Integrate this extension with the 1Password desktop app" on.

If that still doesn't work then To help me better understand the situation I'd like to ask you to take a screenshot of what you're seeing and attach it to your reply:
