I have found touch ID problematic since Sequioa. However my apple watch worked to unlock 1Password after a lot of turning various options on and off and the steps recommended by Dave above. Basically touch ID is not working well generally but I have stopped fiddling with it and trying to get to work as long as my watch opens my important things. Typing in my very secure and long master password was frankly getting tedious all the time.
However it is disappointing. I haven't been prepared to delete any Library files as I am very wary of doing that and I am quite sure it is an Apple issue from experience with touch ID on various devices before.

  • Hello @Philadelphiensis! 👋

I'm sorry that Touch ID isn't working on your Mac. So that I can better understand the situation I'd like to ask you the following:

    1. Are you having issues using Touch ID to unlock the Mac itself? Or is the issue occurring only when you try to unlock 1Password using Touch ID?
    2. Does Touch ID not work with 1Password at all? Or does it work some of the time?

I look forward to hearing from you.

I am pretty happy with 1Password by the way. I logged off and ran a test just now.
1.Touch ID wouldn't unlock my Mac. It never works really with anything as far as I can tell from memory.
    2. As far as I can see for sure it NEVER works for 1Password. This started happening I think after Sequioa.

I have, as I might have said, got my very old apple watch to work as an unlocking device for my 1Password. It vibrates and I have to press the button twice as it asks. I think that is what I do for apple pay and so on. As you know it is hard to be fully systematic and keep a record when touch ID is so glitchy. Frankly I have always found it glitchy really. I was hoping on this machine it would be better!

Thanks for the reply. If Touch ID isn't working to unlock your Mac itself, or any of your other apps, then I would recommend that you reach out to Apple Support so that they can investigate that further and help you get it fixed.

Once Touch ID is working properly on your Mac, let us know if you still see issues with Touch ID when unlocking 1Password and the team and I can help further. 🙂

Thanks Dave for the prompt and useful replies, if I get round to fixing Touch ID with Apple support I will let you know. I haven't got time at the moment and apple watch is saving me from having to type my long password which will do for now. I am reluctant to mess with Library, 'plist' type files and so on. I will let you know if a future update fixes it too.

  • I'm happy that your Apple Watch provides you with a convenient way to unlock 1Password for now. 🙂

Just FYI. I did have some other issues with my display and it was replaced under warranty, so I was offline a few days. I did get Touch ID to work though before that happened. I waited a bit to see if the solution held and it seems it has, even through the replacement process.

What I did was go to the Touch ID and Password panel in "System Settings" from the apple icon drop down. I turned everything off and deleted the fingerprint. Then I restarted a couple of times. Then I just redid the fingerprint and turned on all the settings again. It seemed to fix the issue. I wonder if it will hold for the next update. Again thanks for your help and maybe this will help someone with a similar problem.
I have no idea if the problems with the display or some other hardware issue affected the Touch ID.
