FEATURE REQUEST: "memorable" passwords shorter than three words

Currently the minimum length of a memorable password is three words, which ends up being too long. Just make the default three but have two or even one be an option. Especially when introducing capitalization, symbols and numbers, this is plenty. 1Password's paternalism is in conflict with website's rules about acceptable passwords.

ie: $93*&POTATO6(&

Try the suggested password. Does that generate a correct password for the site? You can always customize the password if needed. I have a few site that are semi rigid in their requirements. Would you be able to share the site in question?

I have also filed your request with the team.

It's Venmo. They've been making me change my password every day, so it's been especially noticeable.

Their requirements are: Minimum 8 characters, maximum 20· Must include upper and lower case letters· Must include at least one number or one of the following characters: !@#$%

So really Venmo should increase the valid length, but we all know they aren't going to do that.

1Password gives me a "memorable" password over 20 characters, like fortunes0arizona-CAROUSEL. If Venmo is comfortable enough with the security of shorter passwords, then it should probably be an option in 1Password (ie: arizona-CAROUSEL4)

My preference would be to allow even 1-word passwords, with numbers and symbols (but not as the default). I think inserting random symbols and numbers in random places inside the word could make it readable but still secure (ie: Car9ou#sel vs. 9Carousel#).

Thanks for the reply. Have you tried the smart password generator to see if it'll generate a password that fits Venmo's requirements? You can find it here:

    1. Navigate to Venmo's password change page in your browser.
    2. Click on the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar.
    3. Click the menu button in the pop-up (it looks like three horizontal lines).
    4. Click Password Generator.
    5. Make sure that "Smart Password" is selected for the type and click Autofill.

I haven't used Venmo myself (it's not available here in Canada), is there a reason why you were looking to create a memorable password specifically?

smart password doesn't do readable/memorable passwords. So it only give me "CRT6tu0opkf2vnq!upu" (which is 19 characters)-- but I'd rather have "KEN3grinning$".

I guess 1Password just needs "Smart AND Memorable"...

  • Thanks for answering my question. We've shared your use case and feature request with the team internally. 🙂
