Assistance Needed with Secret Key Recovery

I accidentally clicked on "Generate New Secret Key" (prompted by 1Password, though I can’t recall the exact trigger). Unfortunately, I didn’t save the emergency kit because of a computer crash shortly afterward. I’m wondering if it’s possible to use my previous Secret Key to recover access.

Here’s my current situation:

I still have my username and valid password, which allow me to access the local vault on my PC.

However, I’ve lost sync with the server and cannot access the vault on iOS or other devices.
Attempting to log into 1Password on the web or mobile requires the Secret Key, which creates a circular dependency.
I’ve reviewed the instructions on this page, but they don’t seem applicable in this locked-out scenario. Please let me know if I’ve misunderstood anything and if there’s a way to retrieve the Secret Key using my local access.

If the only option is to create a new account, can I use the same email address? I must retain my current email address, as I cannot change it.

I’ve been using 1Password since migrating from LastPass, and recreating the account from scratch would be extremely challenging. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Once the Key is changed you'd be unable to use the previous one as it would be invalidated. The current Secret Key would be also used to encrypt the data along with your password.

Given what you've described, it sounds like you'll want the following.

    1. Create a new account for yourself. 1Password Support - Pricing & free trial

    2. Add both accounts to an app. ➕ How to add your 1Password account to the apps

    3. Move any needed data from one account to the other. Move and copy items

⚠️ - Ensure you have a copy of your 🚒 Emergency Kit. It contains a copy of your Secret Key. You'll also need to know your password. We do not have access to those details. They are for you and you alone.

    • I recommend creating a recovery code. I've created one for myself and the members of my family. Generate and use recovery codes. * The Secret Key on the Emergency Kit is not a recovery code.

      • Only take the step below once you're sure your data is available in the new account and you have access to it.
    1. Sign out of the old/former account. Sign out of 1Password

    2. Sign out of the old account on all remaining devices and then into the new one.

⚠️ If you have an individual account may need to temporarily create a family account and once completed you can change the account type to individual. That's because only one individual account can be associated with one given email address. After all data is moved and you've deleted the original account you can change the account type to individual.

Change your profile information and language on 1Password.com

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

I have over 1K entries to copy. Can I copy them in bulk, or do I have to do them 1:1?

To clarify, I have a family account now. Do other members have to migrate too? What about the annual fees that I paid for the current account? Do I get a refund or credit towards the new account?

Lastly, can I generate a Recovery Code now that I lost a Secrete Key (I still have local access)?

  • @ygolder

Yes, you can select one item in the center column, press Command + A and then move all at once.

Yes, the family members would need to move to the new account to ensure you can assist with things like recovery and so that all billing will be under the family umbrella of accounts.

If you only have local access the account would be unable to communicate back to 1Password.com and you'd be unable to create the recovery code. You can however, create the code with the new account.

@ag_tommy I tried your suggestions, but they do not seem to apply to the browser extension. I think what you're missing is that since I changed the secret key (which I don't have), I can no longer log into 1password, i.e. both 1password.com and the desktop/mobile app require a new authentication, which asks for the secret key.

I only still have access to the old vault from Chrome Extension (because it is cached), but the extension does not seem to have the same functions, i.e. I can not find Move or Export functions to copy the contents into the new vault.

I hope I am misunderstanding your instructions and there is a way to move or export the contents of the old vault using Chrome or Firefox extensions.

I'm sorry for any confusion. You can only move in bulk when using the 1Password (application). This would exclude the extensions.
