Feature request: Item linking across vaults

Good day.
The title is self-explanatory. As an organization, we would like to request a feature that would enable us to link an original item in the owner’s account with duplicates across different vaults. This would simplify password updates and sharing.

The current implementation of 1Password does not support item linking. If a duplicate of an item is created in a vault and subsequently shared with a department, and a password update is required, the owner must manually update each entry in all the vaults where the duplicate is located. This process is time-consuming, especially for the CEO, who may be the account owner.

There have been previous requests for this feature, and there are discussions about switching to a password manager service that offers this capability. Therefore, we would like to request an update on the status of this feature and a possible timeline for its implementation.

Thank you.

    Hello @JadeCoffee! 👋

Thank you for the feedback. I don't have any updates on the feature request that is open to add the ability to link items between vaults however I've let the team know that you'd like to see such functionality introduced to 1Password in the future.

Items can currently only be linked in the same vault because each vault is independently encrypted using it's own private key. If you take an item from one vault and link it to an item in another vault, users would need to have access to both vaults in order for the related item link to work and that isn't always the case. Hopefully this is a problem can be solved in the future.

For the time being, have you considered adding a private link to an item that you'd like to refer to from inside of another item in a different vault? You could add the private link to the notes field at the bottom of an item, then users can click on the private link and be directed to the other item as long as they have access to it. Like this:

    Hello Dave,

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, that is not an option in our case, as our use case is somewhat unique. While we are not the only ones with this requirement, there are certain accounts created by CEOs that are shared on a need-to-know basis and are reset frequently. Additionally, there are items shared by CEOs that receive constant updates (e.g., notes, tags, etc.). Regardless of the type of information, it must be updated across all involved parties to ensure everyone is informed.

This is the reason I am requesting this feature. I hope it can be prioritized, as this topic has been raised by several other individuals.

Thank you again for your consideration and have a pleasant day!

Thank you for outlining your use case! I've passed your request and your comments along to the Product team internally.

I think I'm asking a similar question, but maybe different:
I have a business account, with some items in a vault shared with business colleagues.
I have a separate family account (not just vault, a different 1PW account), with items shared with family members.
I have several items that I need to share with members of both vaults, one inside the business account, and the other inside the personal account. Both sets of users need the info for separate purposes.
Now: I copy the relevant items so there are separate / unlinked copies in each vault. That's fine on Day 1. However, if and when I need to update the item, now I need to update it in both places.
Is there a way for the same item to exist in different vaults (and within different accounts) so that changes to one copy are reflected in the other copy, without having to manually remember to do this?
    Thanks.

I'm assuming that's not going to be possible since the encryption keys are different for both business and family accounts in addition to vault encryption keys being different. If the issue I mentioned has persisted for two years, I assume there’s even less they can do to facilitate sharing across accounts. But that’s just my opinion.

If there are any insights about the problems we raised, could you share them? Thank you in advance.

The original request for this is from 2018, has there been any progress on linked items? Sharing items doesn't address the problem at all.
There are many use cases, in business and private use, where you want to share an item from a vault (for example your personal vault) with people who have access to a shared vault. Currently, this is only possible by duplicating items and leads to a lot of duplicates across vaults.
I have seen this behavior in every company I encountered that uses 1Password and I also have the same issue in private use.
