2FA stops working on various websites

I have 1Password on mobile, browser (FF), and linux. I periodically have an issue where for various websites the 2FA stops working (i.e. the 2FA codes are no longer valid) and I have to file a support request with the service in question in order to restore access. This is, obviously, extremely problematic (and, as a result, I'm moving all my 2FA things off 1Password as it has become so unreliable).

This only started becoming a problem about 1y ago. I've been a 1Password user since 2007 (yes, that long) and never previously experienced this.

Anyone got any idea what's going on?

  • Hello @gtf21! 👋

I'm sorry that you're running into issues signing into certain websites when using 1Password as an authenticator app for two-factor authentication. I'm not aware of major reports from other customers or open issues so I'll need to investigate what is going wrong on your end a little more.

It’s important that your device’s time isn’t more than 30 seconds off.. The authentication code changes every 30 seconds, so if your device is more than 30 seconds off, you’ll see an incorrect code.

The next time that you run into the issue, visit this website on each of your devices and make sure the time matches:

    https://time.is

If the date and time on a device doesn’t match, you can adjust it:

Let me know how that goes.

I'm experiencing same issue. I noticed that only the 1Password apps mobile OTP is accepted on either the mobile itself or on Win11 Chrome.

  • @gottmarc

I'm sorry that you're also running into trouble. Have you checked to make sure that time is set correctly on all of your devices using the instructions in my previous post?

Yes, checked. Time is not an issue it’s insync.

Thank you for the reply. So that I can better understand the situation can you tell me the following:

    1. On which website is your one-time password from 1Password not being accepted? Are you trying to enter a one-time password to sign into 1Password itself? Or another website?
    2. What error message do you see when you try to enter your one-time password?
    3. Are you filling your one-time password from 1Password? Or copying and pasting it?

    E.g Amazon.
No matter whether I let 1PW enter code to OTP field or I copy from 1PW and paste to OTP field, the code is not accepted.
As mentioned only Laptop with Win11 is an issue. An OTP code from my IOS 1PW would be accepted on Laptop.

I’ve also been hitting this problem for about a year. I tried to add another 2FA app today and the QR code scans just fine, but when I put the OTP code in Amazon tells me it’s invalid. Happens on my MacBook and iPhone. 1Password was also registered as a 2FA app previously but sometime within the last year stopped working. Microsoft Authenticator still works, though.

TOTP works with all other sites, though. At least for me.

Ah, I missed all the replies here @Dave_1P. I have also checked my time synchronisation and it's pretty exact, and I tried using the code from my mobile phone and it had the same issue, so I don't think that's the problem here. TOTP also worked on several sites, but different sites at different points have "desychronised" or something. Two recent examples come to mind: Digital Ocean and AWS.

    @gottmarc, @heaths, @gtf21

Thank you for those details. So that the team and I can look into this further, please send an email to support+forum@1Password.com and include a link to this thread.

After emailing in, you'll receive a reply from BitBot, our friendly robot assistant with a Support ID that looks something like [#ABC-12345-678]. Post that here, and I'll be able to locate your message and make sure it's gotten to the right place. 🙂

Issue seems to be resolved. At least I can confirm that applied within Win11 all combos stated below are now functional…

    • Are the codes correct when you copy and paste from the 1Password website?
    • Are the codes correct when you copy and paste from the 1Password browser extension?
    • Are the codes correct when you copy and paste them from the 1Password desktop app?
    • Are the codes correct when 1PW auto-inserts codes?
    • Are the codes correct when you copy and enter them from the 1Password IOS app?

  • Thank you for sharing, @gottmarc. I'm glad that it's now working. 🙂
