Which vault do I keep?

I recently got a new MacBook, and the available download for 1Password was only 1Password 7 - which forced me to get a subscription to be able to create or amend my saved log-ins. (The version on my previous MacBook, and other Apple devices, was from the pre-subscription era, and worked just using iCloud Sync.)

Upon setting up a 1Password account, and then moving my fault to 1Password 7 (and later, 1Password 8), I ended up with two vaults:

  • 'Personal'
  • and 'Imported default', which has tags that seem to relate to the import from 1Password 7, and which I assume is the one connected to my 1Password account - rather than just the iCloud Sync I used previously

Searching for any item now shows results from both vaults, which is going to create a confusing mess, so I just want to keep one for now. Which one is best to keep? And should I be syncing between devices using iCloud, or via my 1Password account?

Many thanks for any advice.

You can't delete the Personal vault, so the choice will be made for you in that aspect. You can delete the other if desired.

  • 1Password 8 only syncs via your membership. You'll want to install 1Password 8 on all devices.

"1Password 8 only syncs via your membership. You'll want to install 1Password 8 on all devices."

Thank you - that seems to be the clincher in figuring out how the way to go. I'll install 1Password 8 on other devices and figure out what syncs via my membership.

  • Sounds good. Let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks again. Was straightforward dealing with the two vaults.

    Only two questions for now:

    • 1Password (non-subscription) was opened using the Master Password - which is obviously something I could remember. 1Password 8 asks for the account password, which I set using 1Password itself to generate something hard to remember. Is it recommended to set my account password to something easier to remember, so I can type it from memory? That doesn't feel very secure.
    • Is my Personal vault in 1Password 8 in any way linked to the vault synced by iCloud for previous versions of 1Password? I assume not - but what is the safest way to delete the vault from the previous version?

    Thanks for your help!

Correct, 1Password 8 uses the account password. I use a mix of a memorable password generated with 1Password with a sprinkling of my own. You'll be surprised at how easy the memorable password is. You may need to try generating several until you find something that resonates with you and you have that oh that works moment.

No, your membership is entirely separate from iCloud. It would depend on the device. iOS and the latest OS would take the following steps:

    • Be sure all data is in your 1Password account as I would not want you to experience data loss.
    1. Open the iOS settings app.
    2. Tap your name.
    3. Tap iCloud.
    4. At the top, tap Storage. It's just under their name.
    5. Scroll till you locate 1Password 7.
    6. Tap 1Password 7.
    7. Tap Delete Data from iCloud.
