CLI integration stopped working, just pops 1password in foreground and fails

suddenly the op cli intergration stopped working.
when using op instead of bringing the auth/touch-ID window in the foreground, just the 1password app is popping in the forground and I immediately get this error message:

% op signin
[ERROR] 2025/01/07 15:57:42 connecting to desktop app: 
1Password CLI couldn't connect to the 1Password desktop app. 
To fix this, update the 1Password app to the latest version and restart the app.

% which op
/opt/homebrew/bin/op

% op --version
2.30.3

I since reinstalled 1password and op to the latest and now to nightly, same behaviour.
